So, it isn't working
The day has finally arrived where we try to expose the web service to the outside world. This is the web service that I originally wrote using Java and Tomcat, except our networks guy couldn't get Tomcat installed on Sun Solaris. (Can you say incompetent?) So we all got together and took an executive decision that we would use Sun Application Server instead. This was because at least we could get support for that - we could even pay somebody to come and set the server up for us.

Then this IDIOT in my team shoved his elbow in. He was always annoyed that I was given the web service project in the first place - he wanted to do it, because he thinks that he should do all the 'interesting' things. HE didn't think we should use Sun Application Server, because HE wanted Oracle Application Server because it was all part of HIS MASTER PLAN.

The arrogance of a developer having a MASTER PLAN for the department apparently escaped everybody but me. We had already got together and decided - me, my project leader, my manager, the networks guy, the security guy and their manager - that we were going to use Sun Application Server, but this guy didn't want that. So he complained and complained and complained and complained and complained and complained until my manager called everyone together to discuss whether we should do it in Oracle Application Server instead.

So it was decided to do that, and on top of it, it was decided that I should rewrite all my lovely Java code in Oracle PL/SQL instead. :eyes:

But since I am a SUBORDINATE worker who DOES WHAT HE'S TOLD and DOESN'T COMPLAIN, I did it, because that's what I'm paid here to do.

So I've done everything that is required of me, and now the day is here, where we have to expose this service so the client can start their testing. And guess what? This IDIOT can't get Oracle Application Server working. Quelle surprise. That might have something to do with the face that he's an IDIOT and not a networks guru. He has no experience of administering Oracle Application Server - downloading it and playing with it at home does not count.

He is trying to get himself reinvented as this big high-faluting consultant, which is why he invites himself to loads of meetings and every decision always has to have his input. But the fact is he's an incompetent moron. In any other company he would have been seen for what he is, but here management haven't clocked him. I don't even have much hope that he will get what should be coming to him if he screws this up.

5. Are you sure
you're not Harleydad and that dude is not the asshole he works with? The frustrating thing is that guys like that cause tons of problems and then get kudos all over the place if they show up at midnight to attempt to fix them ... doesn't matter if they're successful or not.

Anyway, here's a hug and a smooch for you. :* :loveya:

23. I think you rewrite the whole thing in ASP.NET and try to port it to Linux!
Then use COM (emulated of course) to make all your database calls to Oracle 10 using the Oracle 7 network library. Ideally these should be Solaris 7 Oracle 7 libraries recompiled and jury-rigged to run on Linux.

Clearly this is the path you must take.

:P

26. Just asking out of curiosity,
could you have installed Tomcat on Sun Solaris and/or gotten the Oracle Application Server up and running? If you can, then couldn't you use your abilities to leverage yourself in closer to management and leverage the idiot(s) out? Just wondering?

27. Maybe...maybe not
I looked at the problem with Tomcat and maybe I could have got it to work, if they would let me have a terminal and gave me the root password. But they would never do that. (And I wouldn't expect them to).

As for the Oracle application server, I honestly have no idea. I know almost nothing about this thing.

28. That's too bad. I've had the displeasure
of working with no-nothing asses who have been up close and personal with management a couple of times. It's not easy. I got by by thinking only about getting my paycheck and whatever else I could manage to get away with.

34. Poor baby
I'm sorry. It'll get better, though. The thing about incompetents like that is that they always -- ALWAYS -- eventually expose themselves. Their arrogance makes them. He's just unspooling the rope. Eventually he'll have enough to make himself a nice little noose.

And use it.

Hang in there, hon.
