Weird..... (cue Twilight Zone music)

One Thursday morning about 6 years ago I was filling for Arne Arnesen on her morning talk radio show produced out of Nashua NH. The guest that day was discussing news of an insect outbreak that was deforesting parts of NH. The insect was "The Woody Adelgid" and it was a big deal, virtually all of NH's Hemlock's were threatened. The outbreak was traced to imported plants sold at several hardware/garden chains (and other places)...

Why is this weird? Well, last night as I was making beans and rice for dinner (kids and I love that stuff) the words "Woody Adelgid" popped into my mind and I thought. I didn't think much of it.

Today, I click over to Yahoo News and one of the front page stories is -

Tiny bug attacking hemlock trees in Ky.

PINEVILLE, Ky. - It's going to take a lot of money to combat a tiny bug that's attacking eastern Kentucky's hemlock trees, forestry officials warned Thursday.

The exotic insect, called the hemlock woolly adelgid, has been detected in only two Kentucky state parks, but the minuscule aphid-like insect has already destroyed hemlock trees throughout Appalachia.

The only thing standing in the way of safeguarding Kentucky hemlocks is the lack of funding, said Tim McClure, a state forest health environmental scientist.

"If we don't act on this and put some resources to it, we're looking at a major problem," McClure said at Pine Mountain State Park, the latest site to report infested trees.

Since forestry officials are trying to measure the scope of the adelgid invasion, there's no specific estimate on how much infestations will cost the state or private landowners. Large-scale destruction in neighboring states has cost millions.

Now, there may very well have been mention of Woody Adelgids on NHPR last night while I was making dinner. If so, I can't remember hearing it. That said, I was a little surprised to have last night's Obscure Insect Reference ^TM show up in the news today.
