Indie actress, 40, found dead in New York
POSTED: 11:05 a.m. EST, November 3, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Adrienne Shelly, an actress best known for her roles in the Hal Hartley films "Trust" and "The Unbelievable Truth," was found dead in her office by her husband, her agent said Thursday.

Shelly was found about 6 p.m. Wednesday. Police said Thursday night that they are awaiting autopsy results before deciding whether to investigate the case as foul play.

An autopsy was performed Thursday, but the medical examiner's office did not have a cause of death.

Shelly, who was 40, appeared as Jerry in the 2005 film "Factotum" with Matt Dillon. She starred as Audry Hugo in the 1989 film "The Unbelievable Truth" and as Maria Coughlin in the 1990 film "Trust." She worked steadily during her career in film, theater and television but later turned to writing and directing, making her directorial debut with "Sudden Manhattan" in 1996.

. . .

Pretty strange news to see. I always hated Hal Hartley films, but that wasn't her fault.

3. Hi, wildhorses. I would ask Westegg (below) that question,
since I found her an enjoyable performer but hated everything (Trust, The Unbelievable Truth) that I saw her in.

Great people revere those films, but I can't really stand anything by that director, the esteemed Hal Hartley. I think it's a class thing and entirely my problem.

2. Yeah. Adrienne Shelley R.I.P.
I'm really blown away by this one. She was SO good in the first two Hal Hartley features, and her performance in "Trust" made me adore her. I'm really shocked by this, since she took her life a few blocks away from me. She was only 40, and had made a bold move into writing and directing. She has (or had, I guess) a film in post-production that she felt good about. Friends of mine had worked with her. I always hoped I'd get to meet her some day.

It's really awful. She was a luminous presence on-screen, and had much talent as a writer and director. I expected her to flourish in the years to come. What a shame.

4. She was excellent in "The Unbelieveable Truth"
I agree with swag that it was for a lost cause, but she was someone who definitly deserved more attention. I'm suprisingly sad about this.

6. Just found this added onto a report on her death...
Update: According to most accounts now, Shelly apparently killed herself and was found hanging from a shower rod in her apartment. Some of these accounts also point out that there is some suspicion of foul play.
