Question about switching Mozilla back to IE
Edited on Sat Dec-27-03 05:10 PM by Booberdawg
I switched to Mozilla about a week or so ago because I got nailed yet again with a butt load of pop-up ads after I clicked open something I shouldn't have. I suddenly had DOZENS of porno screens open up on my window. *sigh*

But I have the Adware software and usually I'm not dumb enough to make those mistakes, and I'm finding everything runs a lot S-L-O-W-E-R with Mozilla, especially in DU, and I want IE back.

So, how do I get IE back? Is there a way I can just switch it back to what I had, or do I have to uninstall Mozilla and reinstall IE. I don't want to make a mess!

****************************************************************

on edit: yes I have all the Adware search and Destroy popup killers and I am happy to rely on that and run them occasionally to keep my system clean.

I went to Mozilla Firebird a week or so ago, it runs TOO SLOW, and I just want to get back to IE without making a mess of things doing it.

2. Mozilla has a popup stop feature
Edited on Sat Dec-27-03 05:05 PM by T Roosevelt
And it works great for me - under Edit::Preferences::Privacy and Security there's a Popup configuration...

On edit: damn smilies!

Kills popup, tab browsing, works ontop of IE. Best Browser I have seen.

13. I second this
While the developer is still working out the kinks, it's pretty damn reliable, uses the IE engine, kills popups, kills flash when you want, offers tabbed browsing, recovers from a crash beautifully, etc, etc.

5. Wait, did you uninstall IE?
Edited on Sat Dec-27-03 05:08 PM by nownow
If you didn't, you can just change your Control Panel/Internet Options 'Internet' preference back to Internet Explorer. It's something that installing these programs changes automatically when it asks you what you want to be your preferred browser, but you can change it back yourself if you don't like what you're using.

Edit -- don't know how computer-savvy you are. Control Panel is accessed from the 'Start' menu in Windows, in case you're less familiar with changing your options than I assumed.

11. Sorry -- I was away from the computer.
It's under the 'Programs' tab in Win95-2k, don't know what OS you're using. I don't know if XP and ME are the same, but I'd assume they are, since they're based on NT like Win2K is.

The 'Programs' tab offers a menu of preferred programs for all uses, like browsing, building web sites (HTML) and E-mail.

12. I did find it.
I'm running XP and there is just a checkbox there to check and see if IE is running as the default browser, and I checked it, but it still seems to me that Mozilla is running now. At least it's not as slow as it was.

Thanks for your help.

8. If your IE icon is on your desktop
just click it to launch the IE browser... I use Opera, but I occasionally run IE alongside with no conflicts... some pages run better with IE...

peace;
rob

9. I changed defaults back to IE but
the icon up in the corner is still indicating Mozilla. I can't find anywhere that tells me to simply change my default browser to IE and that's what I want.

10. Whatever the case - it does seem to be running faster now
I changed to IE defaults but the Mozilla icon is still running in the upper right corner, so maybe I can leave well enough alone now.

Thanks for the tips.

19. If you used adware to block pop ups, you can just turn it off with
Mozilla. Also check out the tabbed browsing feature. Once you start using it, any browser without tabs seems archaic.

Don't go back to IE. You lower your risks of infections by not using IE.

15. DO NOT go back to IE - I beg you! :)
K... there is no conceivable reason why you would possibly want to go back to a less secure, less configurable browser. I can assure you that pop ups of porno have nothing to do with the Mozilla program and probably have to do with invasive spy wear you don't even know you have in your system.

Might I make one recommendation? Please try Firebird - that is Mozillas stand alone web browser. Even in its beta stage, it always kicks the shit out of IE in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY. Don't take my word for it, see what computer magazines and reviewers have been saying about it, as well as word of mouth from other users on their website - but, most of all, try it for yourself.

It is hands down the best browser I have ever used. NO pop-ups, tabbed browsing, and Firebird has an amazing database which lets you type anything into the URL bar and it will automatically take you to the right website.

For example: I tried to test it by typing "maps of china" into the URL bar. It instantly took me to the U. of Texas which has a complete page of all kinds of maps of China.

Go to mozilla.org and give Firebird a try today. I also highly recommend Thunderbird, the stand alone email client that is 55 times better than Outlook for personal home use.

22. That's what I was gonna say
Because I switched to Firebird a few months ago, and haven't gone back simply because its faster. Websites simply load up faster with Firebird than IE. I only use IE because some sites just work better with it, but I'm always afraid to do it, sometimes when I do that, I'm flooded with popups. Firebird almost made me forget what kind of hell that is.

25. If you have to use IE
For thise times when you absolutely positiviely have to use IE, do yourself a favor and install the http://toolbar.google.com">Google tool bar. It has popup blocking built in.

BTW: I run Mozilla Firebird on an ancient AMD K6-II 500 MHz based machine with a whopping 64MB of memory and it is faster than IE in every respect, except on very long or graphics laden pages. I believe because of the way the Gecko engine renders pages that a lot more is cached in memory than with IE. This is what leads to faster page load times most often, but if you are low on memory, then you will likely experience issues that you might not with IE.

I also run Mozilla Thunderbird for my mail client and can wholeheartedly recommend it. Although I do spam and virus filtering on my server, there are still a few pieces of spam that get through, but Thunderbird catches them!

FYI: If you run Firebird or Thunderbird, install the beautiful SkyPilot theme for both of them.

28. I use mozilla,
but not firebird. I have actually never tried it. There are other versions of mozilla that you might like better.

It's a great browser, better than IE. Give it another shot.

24. Couldn't agree more.
Firebird is fabulous. It's time something broke the strangehold that Microsoft and its bloated, slow, insecure, invasive browser has on the Net.

27. I Hate to Say It
But it sounds like you need to make a back-up of all your personal stuff, wipe your HD and reinstall everything.

Mozilla should never run slow, let alone slower than IE. Chances are there's a conflict somewhere, or background software slowing you down.
