Something is on fire!!!!!
Edited on Sat Nov-04-06 10:28 PM by greatauntoftriplets
I am hearing tons of fire engines (can't see them) and am smelling something burning. I can't see anything. This is a near-in Chicago suburb with a lot of old buildings...some of which are landmarks. I hope the damn fire is extinguished soon, that no one gets hurt and no one is left homeless.

Damn, smells like old wood.

More engines heard. Other suburbs are responding.

6. So what happened?! Was this on the news?
Don't leave us in suspense! Let's hope it wasn't one of Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings...:-(

9. No, nothing on the news or the newspaper.
I am going out later and intend to do a little exploring on my way there. If I can see anything, I will post an update on here.

No Frank Lloyd Wrights in this town. That's all in Oak Park, off to the east. And this was taking place south of me.

15. That's very strange, and I just threw Frank Lloyd Wright out there
since I know that some of his buildings are not far from you. But any fire is a tragedy. I had to pull over, last week, for two fire engines, but never saw anything on it, either. I always wonder, as well, when I hear and see them, since this means a tragedy for somebody. Let us know, my friend.:-(

18. A shot in the dark, maybe, but very accurate.
I am less than a mile from a street of amazing Frank Lloyd Wright houses. Where I am is close enough to benefit from Oak Park, but more affordable, with way lower taxes and a neat downtown in our own right with great boutiques and restaurants.

If I find anything out, I definitely will post. I would hate to have a house fire. My father did as a kid. The damage was repaired, no one was injured, but some family memories were lost forever.

20. I remembered, my friend, from the architecture thread.
And Frank Lloyd Wright has always been a favorite of mine. Any house fire is a tragedy, since memories are always lost, not as irreplaceable as lives, certainly, but also quite painful.;(

16. There was more than one fire in this area, last night.
Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 02:44 PM by Rhiannon12866
This is the one making the major news.

Third Adler & Sullivan building burns
http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/124654,CST-NWS-fire05.article

And this one...

East Chicago apartment fire extinguished quickly

19. That Adler & Sullivan house was a sad loss.
And the third A&S building this year. That actually happened Friday night, a house on the city's South Side blew up late Friday afternoon and there was a big apartment fire yesterday in another far west Chicago suburb. I hadn't known about the one in East Chicago.

21. I hate it when any historic building is lost.
And the Chicago area has some particularly great ones. ;(

BTW, did you see the HBO special last night? I found it a little irritating, and I'm sure that you know why, but I really enjoyed the footage of Andy. He absolutely deserved the honor of having it dedicated to him, which is the reason I watched...:loveya:

23. No, I haven't seen it yet....no HBO.
And I have heard the reasons why it is aggravating. It really pissed off Andy's partner and upset his mother. Given you-know-who's penchant for self promotion, I imagine it is not surprising. My niece thinks she got it taped all right for me, but it is Tivo-ed so I will be able to see it at some point.

28. My SO taped it for me, as well.
It's really very well done and definitely worth watching, brings up a lot of things that people should know. And it is also worthy of Andy; the footage of him is affecting and you will thoroughly enjoy that part. However, I can see why it would aggravate Ted and Andy's mother and I feel bad about that, but do understand since it got under my skin, too. There was way too much of you-know-who in it for me to be comfortable, but, then, I know the story. Anyone just tuning in will be informed by it, since it is very well done. But you and I, and those who cared about Andy, will have a different perspective. *sigh*

26. Update....I have no clue where the fire was....
It doesn't seem to have been in my immediate neighborhood, nor in the downtown area. I certainly smelled the smoke, though. Will keep looking when I can. Tomorrow I head back to work and in the wrong direction. Maybe something will be in the newspaper.
