Marie Antoinette- worst movie of all time?
A total waste of time for me and my fiancee. We walked out.

No dialog. Just mumbling. Doesn't a movie need people talking sometimes? (sure- 2001: A Space Odyssey had only 13 minutes of talking in a 3 hour film but the guy was alone out in space for cryin' out loud!) It had a great cast, too- Dunst, Rip Torn, Jason Schwarzman, Judy Davis and Marianne Faithful... shouldn't they have been utilized?

The only acting Kirsten Dunst (who I think is really good) does is when she cries... but wait- where are the tears? If I hadn't known better I'd have thought she was laughing.

And how 'bout that soundtrack? Marie Antoinette RAWKS!!! :headbang: .... right! :eyes:

we didn't even stay to see her decapitated...

So what say you, fellow DU'ers?

1. That's because it was made by the most overrated director of all time
Sofia "Ain't Nepotism Grand?" Coppola

8. Yep!
Am I the only person here who hated Lost in Translation? A couple of people who think they're cooler than everyone else bumbling around Tokyo. Bleah!

2. Coppola (Sofia) does movies with mumbling
Mumbling worked in "Lost in Translation"

It doesn't in this one.

My biggest complaint is that they paint a sympathetic view of the French Aristocracy. Just like the Russian Tsars, I cry no tears for Louis and his spawn. Better as wormfood than dictators I say.

I mean think about it - what difference is there between the Aristocracy and the Ceausescu clan? Somehow we cry tears for "aristrocracy" when they are no different than the Ceausescus...

6. At least Bill Murray had dialog to mumble.

and it was good dialog.

Yup it just doesn't work in this film.

Celebrating tzars and the super rich ain't cool either. Did Dunst at least say "Let them eat cake"?

7. Nope that line is not in the movie
For the sake of argument, however, the Real Marie Antoinette never said that.

Basically it dresses up Marie as the equivalent of the day of Paris Hilton or Nicole Richie, spending most of the movie showing Marie rich and loving it, trying on new dresses, hairpieces, meeting cute rich guys, etc...

Nowhere does it show exactly why the peasants wanted her head on a silver platter - or what drove them to revolt. The closest they get is showing Louis as a weak leader rather than as a clueless aristocrat.

3. That's disappointing to hear
The author of the biography that inspired the movie had a lot of good things to say about it and about Sofia Coppola (in the last Vanity Fair). I was looking forward to it.

4. I like my period pieces as accurate as possible.
I hate what they did with this.

5. I've seen worse
But it was definitely not good. Seemed like she was trying to draw a comparison between Marie Antoinette and modern teenagers, and we should be sympathetic because hell, that's how all kids are these days. Only I don't buy it. The movie was pretentious and boring. And I love Jason Schwartzman, but he was WRONG for this role.

As a horse lover, though, I have to say that the horses and carriages in this movie were almost worth the price of admission. There were some beauties in there!
