What music have you listened to this weekend? |
|
Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 02:35 PM by mvd
I'll be back posting at times through election day, before I go back to my posting break. I didn't see any "listening to" topics up lately, so this is a good time for one!
I've listened to:
Pete Yorn - Nightcrawler Regina Spektor - Begin To Hope Vanessa Carlton - Harmonium B-52s - Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation

1. Here is what I have been listening to: |
|
Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass
One of the best of the year. I love when bands mix and match genres like this. There's two Zappa-esque guitar solos on the disc (one at the beginning and one at the end), and then it almost seamlessly blends genres. Great stuff.
Isis - In The Absence Of Truth
I love this band, they were a perfect fit on the most recent Tool tour. And the new album, while it is more of the same, is a good thing. It rocks.
Mars Volta - Amputecture
As much as I love Mars Volta, this album is kinda meh. It's longer and more drawn out than their previous albums (like that's possible), but it's still very good. And the addition of RHCP guitarist John Frusciante to the lineup - awesome.
Liars - Drums Not Dead
Have not had a chance to listen to this one much (considering I just picked it up last night), but I really like their sound. Will review later.
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
These guys surprised the hell out of me. It sounds like they're trying to shed their emo goth image, and it works. It's catchy as hell. And worth listening to on repeated listens.

That is the only Yo La Tengo I have. Which one should I get next? Consider that I don't buy into the most bands only have a few good albums thing.

15. Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55 (rather obsessively) |
|
Air's music, Jarvis Cocker & Divine Comedy bloke's lyrics & Gainsbourgs fantastic voice - top stuff, & 'Everything I Cannot See' is probably one of my favorite songs of the year.
I also dug out Belle & Sebastian's 'Tigermilk' (for reasons unknown) & have spun that a couple of times.

17. As an extra, here are a few more CDs I've heard lately |
|
Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 07:36 PM by mvd
Kevin Federline - Playing With Fire: F (tied with Paris's CD for worst of the year. He can't rap, recycles beats, and has lyrics that aren't even funny.)
The Who - Endless Wire: B (Not as classic as much of their older stuff, but a workmanlike effort. They can actually get by on the old-time vibe.)
Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell 3: B (The more metallic songs don't work at all, sounding like bad cheese metal instead of soulful. And "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" would be useless if it wasn't for Marion Raven, who I love. But much of the rest is pretty tasty stuff, even if there could be more stand outs.)
I liked samples from Natalie Walker a lot.

Brooke Hogan - Undiscovered: D (yes, she can sing a little better than Paris and has a bit better lyrics, but the beats are even worse.)
Hannah Montana soundtrack: Only heard samples. Miley Cyrus has a good voice, but I'd have to hear more to determine how much I'd like it.

The boyfriend and I went to a BNL concert Thursday night in Philly, listned to Green Day's "American Idiot" on the way up and back. Also listened to Veruca Salt's new CD "IV." We also went to see BNL in Fairfax Saturday night. Today on my iRiver, listened to Courtney Love's "American Sweetheart" and Alanis's "Jagged Little Pill" on the way to and from work.
I've got a bunch of songs on my Windows Media Player, so I'm listening to a random collection of stuff.

26. This weekend, I've listened to: |
|
The Cinematic Orchestra - "Every Day"
9 Lazy 9 - "Sweet Jones"
Françoiz Breut - "Une Saison Volée" (French singer who has a sound that's vaguely reminiscent of the Cowboy Junkies...the album has an overall sense of beautiful melancholy, if that makes sense)
Emilie Simon - "Vegetal"
Nouvelle Vague - "Nouvelle Vague" (A French group that does bossanova-style covers of '80's punk and New Wave tunes--their version of the Dead Kennedys' "Too Drunk To Fuck" is not to be missed)
Cansei de Ser Sexy - "Cansei de Ser Sexy"
Zero 7 - "The Garden"

28. Some new (to me) weird music, mostly: |
|
Compilations of French proto-metal from the early 70s; 60s-70s German psychadelia; Peruvian rock from the same period; Thai rock from the same period; Cambodian rock from the same period; Turkish rock from the same period. I feel like I've been on a crazy globe-spanning musical mushroom trip!
And I listened to "After The Gold Rush."

is Harmonium anything like her first album? With the exception of the overplayed "A Thousand Miles", I liked Be Not Nobody. Oh, and Begin To Hope is a great album - "Samson" is my favorite track. Yours?
So, I've listened to:
Ane Brun - A Temporary Dive Eric Clapton - Slowhand Jem - Finally Woken Santana - The Best Of Fiona Apple - When The Pawn

|
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 11:59 AM by mvd
I still like "A Thousand Miles," but Be Not Nobody had songs that were better than that song. Harmonium has lots of standouts, but maybe not as many that play to radio as much as that song did. It's slightly quirkier on songs like the creepy "She Floats." A little less produced, too.
My favorite from Begin To Hope is hard to choose. "Samson" is beautiful, but I also love the hooky "Better" just as much.
BTW, I like Ane Brun and Jem! If you like Jem, you should check out Lisa Palleschi and Natalie Walker.

I was addicted to musicforthemorningafter for about six months when it came out but haven't listened to it since. And I haven't heard Nightcrawler. How does it rate?
I was studying over the weekend, listening to the new Pearl Jam record, Jurassic 5, and Lamb.

I'm not afraid to give As and A+s to albums I love. You should like Nightcrawler if you liked musicforthemorningafter, but Nightcrawler has more of a power pop sound, with more sweeping but tasteful ballads.

For a couple weeks I've been obsessing on the song "I'm a Dinosaur," on Thrak. It seems to capture something important about this election.
Here's the lyrics, from the Elephant Talk page:
long ago and far away in a different age when i was a dumb young guy fossilized photos of my life then illustrate what an easy prey i must have been standing in the sun, idiot savant something like a monument i'm a dinosaur, somebody is digging my bones
ignorance has alway been something i excel in followed by naivete and pride doesn't take a scientist to see how any clever predator could have a piece of me standing in the sun, idiot savant something like a monument i'm a dinosaur, somebody is digging my bones
when i look back on the past it's a wonder i'm not yet extinct all the mistakes and bad judgements i made nearly pushed me to the brink it doesn't pay to be too nice it's the one thing i have learned still, i made my fossil bed now i toss and turn
i'm a dinosaur, somebody is digging my bones
