Anyone here currently or formerly live in Oxford, MS? |
|
Aside from the fact that its a repub area, what good or bad things can be said about it?
My husband wants to go back to Virginia, but the area he's looking at doesn't thrill me at all. So I'm looking for alternatives... and Oxford was featured in this month's "Cottage Living" magazine (along with a fantastic recipe for Turkey Curry Soup). Thought I'd ask for first-hand advice.
Thank you!

1. I worked at the Domino's Pizza there one night. |

About 20 years ago. All I can tell you is that they have a Domino's Pizza. And a university.

2. I lived there from 1989-1994 |

My ex taught at Ole Miss and I got my degree while there.
I miss it and sometimes wish we'd never left. Do you have children? Are schools a concern?
The area has exploded in the last ten years with people and jobs.
Let me know specifically what you're looking for in a town.

3. no kids, don't plan on them, either... |

just interesting history, homes, individuality, some culture/support of arts, books... I'm so SICK of WalMart generic communities, endless strip malls -- while I know all suburbs are 'infected' and the convenience is nice, I'd like the town itself to have a real downtown heart.
I'd like reasonable proximity to a good airport (1-2 hours away) - I'm guessing that'd be Memphis, and good medical care if we stay into our dotage.
I am no fan of college sports and I know "Ole Miss" is a big football school (right?) but if Ole Miss can also offer jobs, seminars/lectures, etc., I'd be very happy.
Thanks, lizziegrace -- I'd love to know more, what you liked, didn't like, etc. Whenever you have time.

4. I think you'll like Oxford |

Small enough to still have a town square and beautiful old homes but large enough to have more than one stop light. Memphis is about 75 miles away and that's your closest airport. Tupelo is about an hour away and the shopping's not too bad there.
The people are gracious and used to newcomers, since the university population (11,000 when I was there) outnumbered the residents.
A few good restaurants, a wonderful bookstore (Square Books, on the square) and higher than average incomes and education for a southern city of comparable size. The university influences everything about the town. There are concerts and plays at the university and the Memphis Symphony and others have run-out concerts there occasionally. Memphis is close enough to go for an evening event, too.
I would seriously consider going back if I had a chance.
If you have specific questions, please PM me.

sounds very nice, just what I'm looking for... now I just have to plan a trip out there in the next few months. I really appreciate your input, and will probably PM you when I know our travel dates.
Thanks again! :yourock:
