Do I sound American or Australian?
Strange thread, but ...

People who have heard my voice either react with surprise - "you sound like a Yank!" or "yeah, definitely Australian."

I think more people react with the former more so than the latter.

I'll upload some recordings I made:

Earlier in the year I did some poem recitations, so they can stand alone.

So, what d'you think ... ? hehe

3. I am not an expert on Australian dialect
but I wouldn't place you as American.

4. Not American
Your accent made it difficult for me to understand what you were saying.

7. You don't sound Australian
or American either. I would have picked your accent (which is not very strong) as Dutch.

an accent for a voice & speech/drama class? Trying to sound American?

Your "away" is giving you away in the first clip. Plenty in the second - horn really stands out in that one, for example.

Yes, I hear Aussie, especially with the vowels (the key to any accent). :hi:

I made these recordings with the original purpose of helping a French woman I know with her English.

I didn't "play around" with my voice, I assure you. :)

11. The putfiles
didn't play very well for me. But I do hear the Australian side of your voice at times with some shades of Yank and a sort of German sound. It's an interesting voice, unlike my boring Midwestern U.S. accent.

13. Thanks for the responses, everyone.
Sorry that my voice is hard to understand for some. Sometimes I am asked to repeat myself - not speaking clearly enough, or hurrying my speech, an unfortunate tendency sometimes.

For the record I'm from Melbourne, Australia and have lived here all my life.
