As always, I come to the Lounge for advice.... chime in and let me know what you think! |
|
I have class tonight at 6 p.m. and I'm sorely tempted to make a mini-speech before class starts about the importance of voting tomorrow. In volunteering to get the word out on why NOT to vote for the marriage amendment we have on our ballot this year, I've come to realize that a) there are far too many people who are blissfully unaware of the fact that this is even on the ballot and b) there seem to be an equal number who have no idea what this amendment really means to the people of Virginia. I've had some give me blank stares when I ask them what their feelings are about it but I've also talked to others who seem to have the distinct impression that a vote against it is going to somehow change our law and make gay marriage legal in Virginia.
Now, as much as I would love for that to be true, and for the amendment to be struck down and gay marriage made legal, that simply is not the truth. All it really is is the Republican's trying to scare Virginians into voting for them, because they "support this amendment and they'll keep those damn gays from getting hitched". Nothing changes if the No's win... but if it passes, we're paving the way for a real mess when the Equal Protection Clause FINALLY kicks in in Virginia and we deal in a serious way with the issue of gay marriage in Virginia. Unfortunately, the Republican's ploy seems to be working all too well in this area. x(
We have a real mix in our class of young and old, male and female. Should I speak up tonight and explain this to the class, with the hope of getting more people out to vote against it? Tell me what you think, fellow Lounge Lizards! :bounce:

Those who don't understand what's going on could be persuaded to vote no. I've been talking to people about it too.
