New James Bond movie coming next week???
Wow, I saw an advertisement last night - or, more like the very end of a commercial that had a new Bond movie coming out next week. That was a big surprise to me.

Anybody have any opinion on the new guy playing Bond?

Any early buzz on the movie? I only caught the very last second of the commercial, so didn't even realize it was Bond.

2. Daniel Craig is a fine actor, and should do a great job
This movie brings James Bond back to his roots, which means to say that he is a well-dressed, government-sponsored hitman. That's the way Ian Fleming wrote the character, and that's the way Bond's being played for this movie.

I'm a big fan of Bond on screen and in the books, and I can't wait to see this film. All the previews I've seen look fantastic.

3. The producers of the movie said they wanted to go 'back to basics'. Now,
they had said the same thing with 'For Your Eyes Only', 'The Living Daylights', and 'Licence to Kill' (and it was clear that the producers of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' had similar ideas at the time) that Bond should remain in a realistic environment, with taut and gripping tension and where Bond has to use his wits to survive. No dumb or convenient gadgets. (indeed, the producers of 'License to Kill' also made the Brosnan flicks and I'd much rather watch 'Licence to Kill'!)

As a result, I am HYPED. The best Bond flicks don't go overboard with loopy sci-fi (Moonraker, Die Another Day) and don't end up being too silly (any given Moore, most of Connery, or all of Brosnan's flicks).

Strange that for a total revamp they kept Judi Dench as M, but the clip I saw of her actually looks promising - and better than her stint as M in the Brosnan flicks.

4. The Bond films have been over the top for a while
Ever since Moore took over, it's been too reliant on gadgety stuff & gimmicks.

6. The trailer is nothing but explosions& gun play. I'll believe it when I see it.
I too was hoping for the old Flemming "cloak & dagger" fromula- and I like the new actor- but I was disappointed when I saw the trailer- it was all explosions and fight scenes just like every other action movie.

7. Do you mean the teaser or trailer?
The teaser was a lot of explosions & fight scenes. The longer trailer was much better, I thought.

Film critics in Great Britain have liked it:

British Critics Dig the New Bond

Posted by Scott Weinberg on Monday, Nov. 06, 2006, 01:31 AM

Scott Weinberg writes: "Looks like the early responses to "Casino Royale" are surprisingly strong -- and you'd expect the British film experts to be particularly finicky about this specific series.

From Dark Horizons: "The first reviews of the new James Bond flick "Casino Royale" have started popping up in the British press, the film's harshest critics so far.

The good news is most are unabashedly praising the film and Daniel Craig's performance in particular as the best since Connery, and the best Bond film in general since 1995's acclaimed "Goldeneye".

The Times, The Mirror, The Sun, and The Telegraph and The Daily Mail all posted gushing reviews of the film."

Click here for links to all the reviews, and one "not-so-friendly" write-up as well."
