Mid-life crisis
Any good stories? I don't think I am going to have one, and from what I understand, most women don't. I don't want to leave my husband for a young hunk and I really don't like driving above the speed limit anymore so I don't want a new fast car. I will be 49 next year with just one kid still home, but he will be off to college next September. Yet, in my youth I was quite a free spirit,,,, so will I just go bonkers one day and wake up naked on a beach in Jamaica with some guy named Winston?

1. I think mid life crises comes earlier for woman
Sexual peak is around 38 I think. Seriously, I think it's just that around the age you are now you start to come into your own and you begin to set good boundaries and enjoy life more. A good marriage isn't going to dissolve but a shaky one could. However, the shaky ones can dissolve at any age.

just my two cents.

2. Mine was/is interesting.
It happened just about the time I turned 40. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I felt like I had wasted too much time and had to get everything done NOW... And midlife crisis (or passage, or whatever you want to call it) isn't something that necessarily ends, but it's an ongoing process. Mine made me sit up, take notice, and get my act together. I've taken charge of my health and my looks because of it, and it's been extremely positive. The bulk of the "gotta do it now" took about a year to work through.

It also made me shed what wasn't working for me and focus on what was/is. I almost ended my marriage because of it, and it's still a possibility but not as likely as it was a year ago. And midlife crisis has also been a factor in certain things I've done, none of which I have regretted.

I'm at a really good place in my life because of going through that. :)

7. Interesting.....
Lately I have been making myself eat a good breakfast, put on makeup before I go out, and exercising more and caring more about my appearance. A year ago, I would wear the same clothes for days and drink coffee until 2 PM before I would even think of eating. I thought it was because I just finally had the time. But more and more I am thinking about what I want to eat for a healthy lunch. More about making the house attractive rather than liveable, I guess this might be my time for change....:)

4. I don't have any good stories, but I do have an opinion about them
I think people go through mid-life crises because they are out of balance in one way or another. They are out of alignment with their own personal Integrity...which for me is a balance between Mind, Heart, Body and Soul.

They wake up one day and realize they've made choices based on things that don't matter as much anymore and it can be deeply painful to realize how cut off they have become from themselves. That's when you see people make radical and sudden changes in their lives, relationships, careers, etc.

However, to put the positive spin on it, (as I am wont to do) in many cases, the crises themselves become huge re-awakenings to their Authentic Selves, who they really are. People who have gone through mid-life crises can come through the other side being more balanced, alive and awake....and that's ALWAYS a good thing.

My two cents. :hi:

6. Went through one last year and it's just now wearing off...
I REALLY thought about cashing out, buying a sailboat, loading up the family and just spending the next 20 years exploring the world. We could have home-schooled the girls until they were ready for college.

The pluses: We have the money to pull it off, the girls would get see places they'd never see, and I wouldn't have to work anymore.
The negatives: The girls wouldn't have any permanent friends and would anyone want to spend time on a sailboat with 3 women.

I decided to wait until the daughters were off to college, then my wife and I are gone...but it was close!

8. Been there
Bought the sailboat, I think that was my husband's mid life crisis going on, and we contemplated the same thing. Then we started our own business and that dream went away....for a while :).

17. Wow, you even bought the boat.
That's getting close. Hopefully if you still have the dream, you'll get to do it one day.

If it wasn't for the kids, we'd be gone. It's not the sports car, young big breasted blonde, leave the wife & kids kind of mid-life crisis, but it's still a dramatic change. We'll be out there as soon as possible.

13. I'm only 40 and I'm having one.
Seriously.

I don't have any stories, but I'm struggling a lot with who I am and who I want to be when I grow up.

15. As a guy with both feet firmly planted in middle age
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 07:21 PM by Hardhead
I don't understand the whole "chasing after young women" thing, though I am admittedly unconventional. 19-year old women are pleasant to look at, sometimes less pleasant to talk to, and you couldn't pay me to date one. I also drive a beat up old truck and wouldn't want to deal with the upkeep on a little red sports car.

But I have finally realized that I'm going to die.

We are young
Wand'ring the face of the earth
Wondering what our dreams might be worth
Learning that we're only immortal for a limited time...

George Carlin once said that he likes looking at people who are at least 50, studying their faces, because by that age they've either figured it out and are cool with the world, or are defeated and bitter, and you can see it all on their face.

16. I think mine started a couple of years ago
but I'm not sure 'crisis' is the best word for what I'm experiencing. Certainly there's an element of 'oh crap I need to start working on getting the things I wanted to do in my life done.' but for the most part it's been about getting healthy, getting back out in the wild, being more involved in my community...

Oh and I supposed getting a tattoo... ?v=0

:)
