Why do people overfeed their dogs?

2. And each of those breeds is more likely to have back problems anyway.
Sigh.

3. It's abuse, pure and simple.
My aunt had a cocker spaniel she named (ominously) 'Candy.' She fed the poor dog so much that its stomach dragged the ground and it couldn't even get up on the sofa. It died at about eight years old.

I really want to slam people like this repeatedly against a wall.

4. These owners need to be charged with animal cruelty.
No one should let their animals get that fat. Of course, these people probably feed their kids shit, too.

5. Yuck! Poor dogs. It must be hard lugging around all that extra weight.
there could be health reasons, however, accounting for the fat. Thyroid issues, maybe?

6. My parent's dog is pretty bad....
He's about 50 lbs. He's a cocker.

His stomach doesn't drag, but he's very overweight. The table food is their problem. It's incredibly unhealthy for him.

7. Lots of reasons, some of the same ones as why humans get fat, but
aren't those poor dogs a sad sight? :(

9. Both are unhealthy.

Actually, I would think it'd be worse for a dog to be that overweight than if the dog was slightly underweight.

Especially with larger breeds, it's better for the dogs hips if they're a bit underweight.

13. completely agree there
former boss's dog, part rottie part black lab, big dog to begin with and she has bad hips. Already had one surgery. She weighs about 130 lbs. She needs to drop about 30 of those. But the guy is an idiot. He'll go and get lunch, and feed half of it to the dog, who gets treats all day from customers too.

16. Those poor dogs.
My golden would look like that if I fed him as much as he wanted. He is obsessed with food. People think they are loving their animals by feeding them as much as they want. But it just causes so many health problems. I swear EVERY time I take my dogs in to the vet, they literally gush over the fact that they are both at a perfect weight. I guess they don't get to see that often.
