My cat Peter is missing.
He got out last night around 530pm and just disappered. He has escaped before but always shown up shortly after escaping.

I've looked everywhere within a 4 block radius. Went to the pound and Humane Society and filed a missing pet report. He is chipped. The only thing I can think of is he is stuck in a garage somewhere. I'm sick to my stomach with worry. I'm sitting here flipping the fuck out and came to the Lounge for support. I know how many people love kitties here.

On a happier note I voted. Took all of 3 minutes. For an inner city place that's pretty good. We use paper ballets in Minnesota. Pretty darn slick.

18. That's right.
They can be little monkeys that way. While you're pacing up and down and unable to eat, kitty is probably checking out a new mouse hideout. Let us know when he comes back, OK?

9. the important thing to remember is to not get fatalistic -- of course youll fear the worst but
dont let that stop you from making the effort-- plaster your entire neighborhood w/ flyers, offer a reward, enlist neighborhood kids help, go door to door and ask your neighbors to check garages, basement doors, etc. Yeah cats wander off if they're not neutered but unless that's the case I'd operate on the assumption that your cat really does want to get home to you & the warm bed & the food bowl.

Go calling for your cat at night or early a.m.s when its quiet--you are more likely to hear soft or faraway meows and if your cat is timid be more likely to respond. There are some good articles on the internet about finding lost cats, one in particular mentions that while some cats will ask for help from strange humans others will do the exact opposite-- hide in fear. If you're cat is the latter he may be very close but just too terrified to come out... in which case you might have to resort to trapping (although it sounds like yours wouldnt have that problem if he's been outside before). One of mine was carried off once by a kid (I think), was only a block away but totally unable to figure out how to get home. Good luck!

21. Thanks so much Kash for the post.
Thanks to ALL for your thoughts. Peter is not shy and has a big mouth so if he is calling I will hear him. Tomorrow I will plaster the neighborhood with fliers. I'm going to offer a 250.00 reward for his safe return. It's just so bizarre cause he is just gone. Which as I said above makes me think he is locked in somewhere or someone misguidedly has him in their home.

You guys help more than you know.

22. Yup I know.
When I was little my old cat "Ed" had to go to the vet which was "downtown" about 10 miles away from our house. On the way out of the vet he got out of my arms and ran away....I mean totally away.
Hours later we gave up and went home. Two weeks later that cat actually went to the VETS office and meowed at the door.

I love them and know if Peter is alive he will make it home to us.

Some people say cats/pets in general are telepathic; in case they are, he may be able to find his way home if you keep thinking of him.

49. My mom never wanted her cat to go outdoors
We let ours play outdoors when we have the time to keep an eye on them. We've done it since they were kittens.

One advantage of this is that they're familiar with their outdoor surroundings, and always come home (sometimes with a bribe, or other coaxing).

I explained that to my mom. If her cat were to get outdoors, she wouldn't know where she was. She'd be too disoriented to even know where home was.

If you can acclimate your cat to the world outside the house, it can have a benefit.

Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 05:25 PM by Ezlivin
I let our cats experience the outdoors in measured amounts and with constant supervision. But they are not outdoor cats.

We had a cat when we lived in Hawaii that was an outdoor cat. Unfortunately the Phillipinos who lived a couple of doors down (military housing) raised dogs for food. One night their dogs caught our cat about 20 feet from our front door. These four large dogs starting mauling our cat Sly. My wife and I awoke at the racket and I ran outside buck naked and yelled at the dogs. A big black dog had Sly in his mouth; he dropped our cat and ran off with the pack.

I had to go out to sea the next day and so it wasn't until I returned home a couple of weeks later that I found out that my wife had to have our cat put down.

After that we never let our cats go outside again. I was so traumatized by the experience that I can still see our cat dangling from the mouth of that damned dog.

Glad that Peter made it home safely.

31. I lost a cat in GERMANY of all places
once. She was my new baby of six months. Long long story and I was on a military base just before the onset of winter. It was cold. She was a Florida Keys cat. I was a basket case. Long story short, I found her...or rather, she came back. To the barracks where I was staying with my captain girlfriend :P . And she is still with me today, 10 years later (the cat, not the girlfriend.) So anyway, your cat may return. Believe and keep looking. Sending good thoughts your way.

Glad he came back so soon. Years ago my cat took off and disappeared for almost a week. In January. In Minneapolis. It was below zero and the snow was too frozen to track him. I was worried sick that he'd frozen to death somewhere, but he turned up one morning, hungry and with dried leaves in his fur. He ate a bunch, then went to sleep on a radiator for like a day. I'll never know where he went.
