16. Into the Summerland....
I lost 2 loved ones so far this year...

The first was my grandpa, Les. He as a farmer, a quiet man in his later years, who loved to sit in his chair and listen to Big Band music and read biographies when he wasn't out on a tractor or tending the livestock. He was 83 when he passed over in January

The other is the original Joe Dog, an alleged beagle/basset mix who came to live with my family as a stray, and became part of the clan. He was a gentle, easy-going soul who loved children almost as much as they loved him. He was approximately 16 or 17 when he passed in June.

RIP, my two old gentlemen. I just know you're walking around the Summerland together, but I still miss you.

24. Janis & Etheridge.
This is in no way intended to take the light away from Janis.

Did you see Melissa Ethridge's first performance after cancer surgery & chemo? I forget the awards ceremony, but GOD, was she hot -- and completely bald. It worked for her. What a statement.

And she did "Take Another Little Piece of My Heart." I have no doubt that Janis lent Melissa whatever she could for that performance. Just awesome.

Janis died when I was around six or seven, I think. I wasn't aware of who she was or of her death. But by god, I know who she is now. What a tremendous loss.

25. I miss my grandparents desperately.
Especially on days like this. They would have just loved the rethug smack down.

In their younger days.

With me as a kid at Disneyland in 1982.

And together, near the end.

My grandpa was on the School Board in Kentucky. When it wasn't popular, he was open to the teaching of evolution in the school. This shocked many people because he was also a church-going Christian. They couldn't reconcile the two. My grandmother was married twice before, to two unworthy men. When she finally met my grandfather, she had recently divorced her second husband. When they were planning on getting married, her second husband took my grandfather to court, claiming my grandfather had stolen his "property"- my grandmother. Remember, this is the mid 1930s. My grandfather's argument was that since he considered women equal, and not any less nor his property, it was therefore impossible to claim stolen property. He never hid where my grandmother was, and she wasn't secret about her location, either.

Needless to say, my grandpa won!

He eventually owned his own Ford dealership. It was the only car dealership of any kind in the county. He practically gave the cars away. If you didn't have the money, he'd allow you to pay in crops or any other wares you may sell or make (he wasn't very picky!). If you grew corn, for example, each year, when your crops came in, just bring a bit and he would sell it right from the garage. And, funny that, he would always manage to "misplace" how much you still owed him after a short period of time or during a bad crop season. He never made a fortune, but his argument always was "How much do I need, anyway?"

I miss them desperately everyday.

My grandpa and me in the late 1970s.

My grandparents, my mom and me in the late 80s or early 90s.

Grandma and grandpa holding my mom.

My grandparents and my mom at the family cemetery.

My mom and my grandparents in front of the last Ford car my grandpa bought.

I just cherish the pictures. I also kept every card and letter they ever sent me. I look through those every once in a while, too. And I have some of their things, which I treasure. My grandma's angels from her collection is on my bookshelf and I am looking at it right now.

39. Emily tries, but misunderstands...
"See Emily Play"

Emily tries but misunderstands, ah ooh
She often inclined to borrow somebody's dreams till tomorrow
There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See Emily play
Soon after dark Emily cries, ah ooh
Gazing through trees in sorrow hardly a sound till tomorrow
There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See Emily play
Put on a gown that touches the ground, ah ooh
Float on a river forever and ever, Emily
There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See Emily play

Here's one for someone who truly saw the world from a different point of view.

27. Maynard Ferguson, Jazz Trumpet **Superhero**

http://www.maynardferguson.com/mf1928_2006.htm

Scroll to the bottom for lots of testimonials.

Maynard passed away on 23 Aug. I was driving through the mountains of northern MD in the wee hours of the morning when I heard the DJ announce that he had heard the news. I'd been listening to Maynard since the late 70's but only got to hear him in concert once -- and never got to meet him in person. It really feels like the end of an era.

For a lot of guys my age, this excellent column by David Van Dehle in the WP describes MF's appeal:
