Fellow archaeology buffs: History International is running a show about the Sea Peoples
Now (9 pm EST), to be rerun at 1 am. Turns out they were Amway salesmen. Who knew? (Ok, kidding about the last part; it really is an excellent show.)

1. Are these the people that spend so much time swimming that their eyes ....
have adapted especially well to seeing clearly underwater? Bummer, I'm cable challenged and can't view History International.

3. No no no. In ancient times, they rose up mysteriously and attacked many nations
and empires, more or less simultaneously. Brought down the Hittites, Mycenaeans and maybe a few others and shook the Egyptians.

5. yes i remember these guys from my ancient history class!
these guys came out of nowhere, wreaked destruction on a massive scale, and then vanished without a trace. Nobody seems to ever talk about them.

11. There is one theory
that the Sea Peoples settled down in ancient Israel and became the Philistines. It's theorized that they were related to the Greeks (names of 2 of the tribes of Sea Peoples are similar to Danaoi and Achaeans)and if you look at Philistine sites in Israel you find (1) they take over, with some integration, the Canaanite sites and culture and (2) pottery at Philistine sites starts out being Mycenean IIIC in style and then transitions to the Philistine style. Another interesting aspect of Philistine palace architecture is that it appears related to Mycenean palace architecture - i.e. the main room being the megaron with a central circular hearth. All in all a fascinating group.

15. I miss Chef

Chef: Oh, welll, hello there, children.

Stan: Chef, we did something kind of bad.

Kyle: We don't know who else to talk to.

Chef: Ohh, I'm sure your little cracker problems ain't all that bad. Come on in. Now, just sit down and take a deep breath and tell ol' Chef what's goin' on.

Stan: We need you to promise not to tell anybody.

Chef: Nowww, children, every problem can be worked out. What was it?

Stan: We... killed our teacher and they found our seamen in her stomach

Chef: ...Oh, children, that's a problem we all have to face at one time or another. Here: let me sing you a little song that might cheer you up. Sometimes you kill your teacher and they find your semen in her stomach, and uh Wait! What the what?!

Stan: So what should we do?

Kyle: Wow, I guess this really is a big deal.

7. IMO, this is incredibly interesting
seriously, this is a group of people that had crazy influence in the ancient world, and we know nothing about them. The "sea peoples" should be every anthropologist/archeologist/historians quest.

9. Darn
that sounds interesting. I wish we got History International, but we currently have Comcast Cable and they don't offer it. However, in a very short time we will be switching to Verizon's FiOS service and will be getting History International so perhaps I'll catch it on re-runs.

16. I do believe i may have seen it.
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 04:03 PM by William Bloode
Very possible these are the Hyksos of ancient Egypt, and possibally the Phillistines of the Bible. It is conjectured that during this period a volcanoe explosion in the Agean caused a mass migration, that led to a dark age during the 1200-1000 b.c. area.

I'll have to watch. Despite being gloriously under educated(bet i have the lowest education on DU)the study of archeology, and ancient history are one of my favorite passtimes.
