The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Thu 11/9/06)
The Love Cook

Let me cook you some dinner.
Sit down and take off your shoes
and socks and in fact the rest
of your clothes, have a daiquiri,
turn on some music and dance
around the house, inside and out,
it’s night and the neighbors
are sleeping, those dolts, and
the stars are shining bright,
and I’ve got the burners lit
for you, you hungry thing.

Ron Padgett

6. Can we post our own poetry?
A little excerpt from one of my recent ones:

from "A Carpenter's Daughter

A grand artisan without a legend, his softwood
hands skillfully held and shaped my childhood.
He never walked with disciples, but I swear
he turned a loaf and a fish into a feast
so many times. No more than a man,
no less than a father, he lived and died
with callous-streaked fingers full of wood.

That's the last stanza of something I recently wrote as a tribute to my father. He was a Vietnam Vet by choice, a carpenter by trade, and the rock of my youth. He was murdered in 1995; found thrown over a hill in a forest with massive head injuries, his hands full of pieces of sapling trees and brush and thorns.

He was a strong Democrat, a working-man's Democrat, and I've been thinking about him a lot today. He would have been so happy to have seen his beloved Democratic Party in charge again.

Sorry--didn't mean to be a downer.

I have no ownership on these threads. I put them out there for many reasons.

15. Oh yes, we know what happened.
A couple of redneck 20-somethings got drunk and went crazy. They kidnapped him from our neighborhood, then beat him until his skull cracked and tossed him over a hill to die.

One of them testified against the one who actually did the killing, and got out in a few years. The other is in for life--we're not a death penalty state here, which I'm glad for, because I oppose it.

This whole election is one of those times that I miss him the most. He would have been partying like crazy with the rest of us, were he here. *smiles*

*goes to find the writing and poetry forums* Thank you for the welcome :)
