My mother sent me this. Filial duty forces me to post it here |
|
because I can't think of ten people who'd be pleased to receive it from me... Who knows, it may save a life. Isn't this a motherly thing to send your 43-yr-old daughter? lol.
STROKE IDENTIFICATION: > >During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured >everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just >tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up >and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, >Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's >husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to >the hospital - (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a >stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a >stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. They end >up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. > > > >It only takes a minute to read this... >A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours >he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the >trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and then getting the >patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. > > RECOGNIZING A STROKE >Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR. Read and Learn! > >Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, >the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer >severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of >a stroke. > >Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three >simple questions: >S * Ask the individual to SMILE. >T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE COHERENTLY. >(i.e. It is sunny out today.) >R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. > > NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' >out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or >the other that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has >trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe >the symptoms to the dispatcher. > >A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 >people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved. > > > > > > >"There are two ways to live your life. >Live as though there are no miracles or live as though everything is a >miracle". > > >Albert Einstein

1. Well, there's only one appropriate response. |
|
The next time you see her, do the Hokey-Pokey with a big smile on your face. That ought to ease her mind.

2. She lives on the other coast and we rarely see one another. |
|
Which is why you'd think I might receive something more meaningful. Eh, I'm very bad at keeping in touch; I can't be critical.

3. So Einstein wrote this, did he? |

Any neurologist who promises to be able to 'totally' reverse the effects of any stroke that he/she treats within three hours is a charlatan. Strokes vary widely in severity and effect. If someone suffers a massive stroke to a key brain center, they're screwed, I don't care who their doctor is.
While the 'STR' test may give an indication of brain impairment, it is not an unequivocal diagnostic tool for stroke. You have to know what the patient's baseline responses to the tests were in order to know if they have changed as a result of stroke or other neurological insult.
I think ol' Albert should have stuck to physics and cosmology. He made a lousy doctor.

7. Well, I liked this post! |
|
My mother-in-law had a transient ischemic attack that required hospilization. She was staggering because she was leaning to one side, bumping into things because she wasn't aware of her left side and all the time insisting that she was fine! Just as animals tend to hide when they are hurt or sick, people tend to deny being ill when they have a stroke or heart attack.
Yes, not everyone recovers from a stroke, but the faster they are treated the better the chances for a good outcome.
