Sooo... any band geeks want to settle this one?
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 01:55 PM by MiniMandaRuth
*In class other day.*

Me: *Talking to friend* Yeah. Well... at least we got acknowledged at the last game. We're so ignored, the band... We never get acknowledged at anything. Remember the homecoming assembly? Oy.

English teacher: *Walks up and butts into private conversation* Well do something amazing before you start complaining.

Me: *Shocked* .... I think standing outside for twenty hours in the cold and rain with a twenty-pound instrument strapped to your back with no coat on during the night standing on your feet the entire time. I think that's pretty amazing. I think the fact that we preformed two half time shows while playing and we memorized the music. I had to go backwards while playing a low C on my bari sax into a rotating ball of flutes. I. Think. That's. Amazing.

English teacher: Do you want to go down to the office?

Me: WTF?

Yeah. I almost got sent down to the office for that.

1. Your English teacher is a fuckstick
I imagine he was too busy sniffing the jocks of the football players to notice anything else in high school.

9. But I think we can both agree....
Nothing must be as painful as marching with a sousaphone.

3. It's 'cause you showed up your teacher being a dick
Being a dick, she/he thus needed to compensate by stamping his/her authority.

4. "Amazing? You mean like shaving an ape and having him/her teach English?
Now why didn't I think of that?"

5. Well, I'm not a band geek

6. English teachers....
most of them...don't understand what you go through. They think, truly, that it's just a little bit of practice and then you go out and do these things. They have No concept of the work involved.

None.

Now, if you'd memorized Hamlet's soliloquy and performed it while standing on your head and to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb"...THAT she might think was amazing.

It's all in the perception.

That, and the fact that you didn't meekly say, "Yes, ma'am." and end your conversation. THAT was the real crime. To her, anyway.

8. Most mortals dont understand the band
standing outside in the cold and rain, or heat and humidity, for hours on end, with a heavy instrument strapped to your neck.

Try telling the Division Commander that "no, the band cannot play your favorite march while running past the reviewing stand for the post 5K race".

10. What a snarky asshole she is!
WTF??

Strap a tenor sax around her lousy neck and make her do "eights and eights" in the damn parking lot--in step and in formation, rolling her toes, crisp drag-halts and all...grrrrrrr

Marching band is athletics, algebra, foreign language, science and group dynamics/psychology ALL rolled into one!

You done good my dear! Band Horns UP!

11. As a former band and orchestra geek...
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 05:16 PM by GoddessOfGuinness
I can promise you that the number of people who appreciate your craft are few and far between when you're in a high school auditorium or on the field. I was in both bands playing trombone as well as a violinist in the school orchestra. For most concerts, the orchestra couldn't even hear itself play over the talking during school assemblies.

But those who did care, including ourselves, made every moment worthwhile. When I perform now, I play for people who are there to listen...except when I play for parties and such, when I'm just the muzak again.

And I LOVE seeing kids out on the field and in parades doing their marching band formations. I still get teary-eyed watching the bands in the Macy's parade, knowing that a lot of them spent the night on a bus, and got up at 4, and are freaked about their lips getting cracked from the cold, dry air and over-playing...knowing that they love it in spite of the complaints, because their grandmas might see them on TV and feel so proud.

Don't let the morans get to you. Enjoy yourselves.

13. So you have these private conversations in class frequently?
When I was in school, there was no talking unless called on by the teacher

14. I'm with you...but you left out one important part..
trying to do all of that while getting smacked on the elbow repeatedly from the freshman in flagline who's 2 paces off their mark.

I spent four years playing baritone in marching band and 5 years in drum and bugle corps.
Your teacher is an asshat.
