12. Jackson Browne: Lives In the Balance

From the video forum

Direct from youtube

Ive been waiting for something to happen
For a week or a month or a year
With the blood in the ink of the headlines
And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember
When you know that youve seen it before
Where a government lies to a people
And a country is drifting to war

And theres a shadow on the faces
Of the men who send the guns
To the wars that are fought in places
Where their business interest runs

On the radio talk shows and the t.v.
You hear one thing again and again
How the u.s.a. stands for freedom
And we come to the aid of a friend
But who are the ones that we call our friends--
These governments killing their own?
Or the people who finally cant take any more
And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone
There are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

Theres a shadow on the faces
Of the men who fan the flames
Of the wars that are fought in places
Where we cant even say the names

They sell us the president the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us every thing from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But theyre never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

It took me forever to track the band down becuase I kept describing it as "the guy who sounds like the guy from Interpol but isn't." Love it, it makes me want to read American Psycho again for some reason.

I'm listening to "Once And Never Again" by the Long Blondes. I've actually heard a few of their songs from a website. I love "Once And Never Again" - sounds a little like Lillix's "Every Girl," which is also great. It sounds like the Long Blondes mix dance and punk and pop well, where Le Tigre didn't. Hope the whole CD Someone to Drive Me Home is as good as Lillix's Inside The Hollow.

Other stuff I've heard lately:

Alison Ray - Downside Up (WOW! This debut is as good as Alanis's Jagged Little Pill IMO. Can't wait for December 5, when it comes out! You can hear the songs at www.alisonray.com.)

The Shins - "Phantom Limb" (this song shows why I love the Shins! While not all that catchy, it's sublime and very enjoyable.)

Daughtry - "It's Not Over" and previews at his Myspace. The previews of songs were better than "It's Not Over," but nothing really stood out to me. Guess I just don't like that style very much.

Gwen Stefani - "Wind It Up" (ugh - what happened, Gwen?)

Hannah Montana soundtrack (pleasant, and I do have some young pop singers in my collection that I enjoy, but I think I'll take a pass on buying this one. Average for me, but good for kids.)

Keith Urban - Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing (I thought he was better when he just let his country roots show more, but there are enough standouts to justify another listen.)

Joanna Newsom - samples from Ys (so far, I have to say I don't find it anymore interesting than The Milk-Eyed Mender.)

Nellie McKay - samples from Pretty Little Head (while I found her intriguing before, she's modernized a little bit and what I heard really impressed me)
