What is the last movie you saw in the theater?
We saw "Marie Antoinette" the other day.

I loved it for its costumes and setting - but was a bit disturbed by the music selection. Oh well, it was a Sofia Coppola production and she is on the edge anyway.

I went with my husband a couple of weeks ago. Amazing story, and so pertinent to today.
I had remembered reading about those guys being used for the War Bond effort - but I didn't know the story of the 'photo' - I won't give it away for those who haven't seen it.

I liked it very much.

75. I enjoyed it
I didn't go expecting anything groundbreaking, but it did take the story in a new direction. However it did have some plot holes that I found irritating. That ghost is one of the creepier things to come along in horror cinema. I'm a big J-Horror fan, I even own the original Ju-On on DVD. If you want a real visceral creep out, I recommend Audition. That film has some real cringe-worthy moments.

106. That's the last one I saw, too
I decided to give it a shot even though I didn't like the first one. This one did have an even more unbelievable plot, but I enjoyed it quite a bit more. A couple of the "jump" scenes actually worked on me, and having several sub-plots going on and tying them together worked, in my mind. Plus, I have a crush on Amber Tamblyn. Oh yeah, also I'm not sure how they're going to make a third one (as I think they're slated to) since they killed off pretty much everyone in this one! I'm sure they'll think of something...

(Also, I saw the last thirty-forty minutes of The Departed as I didn't feel like waiting outside the whole time for my friend to come out of it. It kind of made me interested in seeing it, though I'm not sure if I'll get around to it while it's still in theaters. I don't see as many movies as I used to, especially compared to last year.)

I'm kind of a period film geek, and I had never seen one done quite like that before, so I was really interested going in. I really liked the trailer, which was set to a New Order song. In the film itself, the music just didn't work for me. After a while I started to feel like I was watching one of those high-minded teen movies like "Clueless" or "10 Things I Hate About You." And maybe that was Sophia Coppola's point, but I just didn't dig it.

Last year's "Pride & Prejudice" also had a bit of that teen movie feel, but I thought that one was very well done.

23. I'm the same way.
I expect period music in period films. When the film began, I actually thought I was sitting in the wrong theater.
With the music aside - I really, really wanted a couple of those petits fours!!
Wasn't it just decadent? Coppola did a wonderful job in portraying the opulence of that court. Made me think a lot of the Bushies and how they aren't in tune with the real world, either.

30. Gawd I wanted some of that food!
You touch on one of the good things about the movie. Aside from the opulence, I also think she really captured the sense of boredom that must have accompanied a wealthy woman's life back then. (The men seemed to have a few more options when it came to entertaining oneself.) And also the invasions into her privacy. 50 people standing in the room during what nowadays would be some pretty intimate moments! You don't usually see the dull or uncomfortable side of life in a period film.

40. I was lucky enough to have visited Versailles a few years ago.
Have you been there? It's absolutely breathtaking. I remember standing on the gallery side of that railing wondering what it must have felt like to have people watching you. I also thought Coppola was accurate in showing what women/girls had to go through for their country when betrothed to another King or Prince. Marie did her duty. I suppose, on second thought, there was much more to that movie than I initially gave it credit for.

That was my chief form of entertainment (aside from the library) growing up. I now have the luxury of going mid-week with the theater hardly occupied. So, it's almost like being at home, I guess - with a much better sound system.

43. It's amazing, isn't it - how we perceive things in writing rather than
hearing it said?
I've sat on a few juries and think of my experiences whenever I hear people remark about something written in the newspaper and then comment about it (usually negatively). You just don't know how to really take something unless you hear its inflection.

Does any of what I just typed make any sense?
I hope so.

I wonder why there hasn't been an MLK movie? Or, if there has been, I've totally forgotten it??

61. I'm not sure, Bullwinkle.
Maybe because people like going to movies in the winter -- a break from shopping and family stuff, getting out of inclement weather?

I will tell you this -- the very best part of the movie, for me, was the fact that they used actual clips of RFK instead of having someone play him (except for some distance shots where the face was not really visible). That had a real impact on me.

63. I remember vividly where I was when I heard the news....
I was hanging out with my friends in a small town in Kansas, when one of the police squad cars (swear to god) stopped and told us that they had just received an APB for the killer of Kennedy. It was such a deja vu moment for me - I thought he was talking about John. Couldn't even think that would happen to Bobby. We were sitting in our car at the Sonic. Yup, the Sonic. Such a surreal moment in my life.
I moved to California later that year. When I met my husband and we shared stories about our lives, he told me that he had actually met Bobby the day before he was assassinated and shook his hand.
Creepy!

Wasn't it such a difficult time in our lives as well as this country's?

And then the attempts on Wallace, Ford and Regan. When John Lennon was killed - we were watching Monday Night Football and heard the sportscasters announce it. Seems like we had quite a few years strung together full of mayhem. Not to mention, The Mansons, The Zebra Killings and The Zodiac. Quite an interesting time to have moved to California.

47. The Departed.
I love going to the movies, so I had a great time. I was expecting it to be great, since all the reviews were really good and most critics gave it As, or 4 stars and all that.

I think I'm the only person in America who didn't like it, and I'm not really THAT hard to please when it comes to movies. I mean, I enjoyed it as entertainment, but I thought the acting sucked, with the notable exception of Matt Damon, who was terrific, and the plot stretched even my willingly suspended belief.

Still, I'm glad I went. We had a good time.

59. The Prestige.
In spite of the fact that I like Michael Caine, I found the plot construction to be confusing and the dialog in parts to be totally unintelligable. Ms. Longship liked it a lot, and I might have, too, if I could understand what the mush mouth actors were saying.

Here's the trailer.

I went out of morbid curiousity, really. It poses some interesting moral questions- was it 'right' for them to film the suicides and use them without the people's consent? Hmm. It was interesting. What was even more interesting is that everyone at the showing I went to was alone. Except for one mother with her son, and they left halfway through. A movie about suicide's not a fun Sunday trip, I guess :)

79. "Offside," by Jafar Panahi.
A few months ago I went to see this film at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

It was a unique experience, the theatre was huge, magnificent! And the director himself came out and spoke to those in attendance from the stage: his motivation for making this film, and also congratulating Australia's performance at the World Cup.

Great film, about a girl going to great lengths to get inside the stadium to watch a WC qualifier between Iran and Bahrain, but finds difficulties as females are banned from attending football matches in Iran. Throughout it highlights this absurdity.

Although, I am really over Jack Nicholson's shtick. I think the movie could have been better if someone else were cast in his part...I'm thinking my man Ian McShane could have definitely pulled it off!

And I must also say, Leo DeCaprio has come a looong way from Titanic (which I thought he was great in, but he has definitely matured.) He really is one of the greatest solid, underrated actors working out there today (IMHO.) And for those DUers who appreciate a beautiful male physique...all I have to say is Leo is looks very, very good in this movie! Yowzaa! :loveya:

I hate going to the movie theater in Philly- the other patrons are soooooooo rude. Talking on cell phones, bringing screaming infants to R rated movies that start at 10 pm, talking loudly throughout the show, constantly getting up and going in and out of the theater. I just simply stopped attending movies in Philly theaters, preferring to watch DVDs on my HD TV in the comfort of my home.

But every Christmas for three years in a row, when I went to spend the holidays with my family in Kentucky, we would all go to see the latest LOTR movie together. So, that would be the last movie I saw in the theater.

110. It's not nearly as inflammatory as it was made out to be
It's not a great movie and I'd hoped that they'd do more with such a provactive premise, but there are some pretty good performances in it. I thought the guy who played the young black soldier was terrific.

I think the film makes a very important point, but it seemed a little punchless at times.

The controversy around it seems way overblown to me.

Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 06:14 PM by MysticalChicken
God, I haven't been on here in forever...

Anywho, I just saw Stranger than Fiction last night. It was really, really good. Will Ferrell, for once in his life, does not do the whole run-around-naked-and-scream-a-lot schtick that he does with seemingly every one of his other movies. Subtle, sarcastic humor; hardly any over-the-top, "we're-trying-so-hard-to-be-funny" slapstick comedy. I also cried for about a 10-15 minute stretch, which seems kind of stupid when you consider that it's a Will Ferrell movie, but it was seriously quite moving in a few parts. I also like Maggie Gyllenhaal, as well. Also? Freakin' awesome soundtrack. Instrumental versions of alternative/indie rock songs (although the soundtrack CD itself has the sung versions). Four Spoon songs! And the Jam! Effin' A yeah! I think I might buy the soundtrack, and I never buy soundtracks. Anyway, yeah, I liked it a lot.
