In honor of all Veterans, a picture of my Mom as a Marine in WWII

She joined the USMC in the first year that they allowed women to become Marines. She worked in the coding rooms at Camp Pendleton and other stations during WWII. She's now 88 and still attends Women Marines' luncheons. Her father was also a Marine in WWI, an expert rifleman and trained other Marines to shoot. My Dad also was in the Marines, for 20 years and was a pilot in WWII and the Korean conflict. All of us Democrats, though my Dad used to call himself independent, he mostly voted for Democrats. Happy Veterans' Day to all veterans!

5. Yeah mom!
Happy Veteran's day to her and to all other veterans out there. My father was a Marine for 25 years, so I have a certain type of respect for the Marine Corps. I think it's because my father *made* me have respect...LOL

8. That is so cool
My daughter is a decorated combat veteran (Afghanistan, although she was deployed in Korea as well- Army)

Honoring our service women as well as men is very important this veterans day. Thank your Mom for her service to her country for me!

:hi:

She is an ornament to our great country, and an excellent example of those who serve.

Thank you, bob; and since you're reading our replies to her, thank her for me. :patriot:

11. Thanks, I will print out and read all the replies to this thread to her. The first Woman Marine was
Opha Mae Johnson, who enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1918. Women were reservists for the first 25 years they were in the Marines But the first commissioned officers and first enlisted women in the Marines weren't until 1943, the year that my Mom joined the Marines. The first Woman Marine deployed to a combat zone is listed as Barbara Dulinsky, but I don't know the year or any other information about her.

12. Her beauty, intelligence and character just radiates in that picture
What a fascinating place for her to end up serving - the coding room must have provided her with a LOT of stories. Will she spill any secrets?

Please give her my thanks for her service!

Today a phalanx of WWII planes was doing formations over my farm and everyone stopped to watch and admire them. They were so graceful and precise - it was very cool. They were so close overhead but we all could still hear each other oooh and ahhh since the planes aren't nearly as noisy as they are now.

This group keeps the planes in a nearby hanger and I always stop and watch them when they practice. It's wonderful they do this, and keep this part of our history alive.

14. Thanks. I always tell her if she hadn't translated the secret messages properly, then
we would all be speaking Japanese today.
