Poll question: So, you helped us name our son. Now help us name our daughter...
We think it's a girl, although not 100% confirmed. My wife and I have narrowed the potential names down to
these. What do you think?

1. Isobel and Olivia though quite lovely
are really gaining in popularity. ugg. don't want to go there. Vega was a car I drove in the late 70's---how do you pronounce Paola? Does it work with the surname? with a middle name does the whole name have a pleasing cadence? I'm really picky on the whole thing. Good luck! :hi:

5. How about "Colberta Truthy LiberalSailor"?
Actually, Paola is a lovely and unique name. I also like Isabel and Olivia, but both (especially Olivia) are increasingly common. Paola is unique, but also easy to pronounce. Vega is a nice name too.

What's the last letter of your last name? If it's an "A," I would suggest Isabel.

Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 08:33 PM by Kerrytravelers
I like to know the meaning of names and their orgins. Popularity doesn't matter to me, as I really loved the name Emily, and have for years. I also want to know if there is anything of importance connected to the name, olike if it's a place or a tragic event that somehow connects to the name. I ran the names through my regular checks.

PAOLA
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Italian, Spanish
Pronounced: POW-lah (Italian), pah-O-lah (Spanish)
Italian and Spanish feminine form of PAUL
http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=Paola&nmd=n&gender=both&operator=or
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paola
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paola,_Malta

ISABEL
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Spanish, Portuguese, French, English, German
Pronounced: ee-sah-BEL (Spanish), ee-za-BEL (French), IZ-a-bel (English), ee-zah-BEL (German)
Most likely a medieval Spanish form of ELIZABETH, although some theories state that Isabel actually derives from an old Semitic name meaning "daughter of BA'AL". Queens of Castile and Portugal and a queen of England have borne this name.

http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi

VEGA
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Astronomy
The name of a star in the constellation Lyra. Its name is from Arabic الواقع (al-Waqi') meaning "the swooping (eagle)".

OLIVIA
Gender: Feminine
Usage: English, Italian, Spanish, German, Finnish
Pronounced: o-LIV-ee-a (English), o-LEE-vee-ah (German)
Created by Shakespeare for a character in his comedy 'Twelfth Night'. He may have based it on the name OLIVER or on Latin oliva "olive". In the play Olivia is a noblewoman who is wooed by Duke Orsino but instead falls in love with his messenger Cesario.

OLÍVIA
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Portuguese
Portuguese form of OLIVIA
http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=Olivia&nmd=n&gender=both&operator=or
http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi

I would not spend too much time on baby naming sites. The ones with all the glittery, sparkly junk will tell anyone that everything sounds "cute" and that "it's your baby, name your twins Adolph and Eva, no one will notice." I'd also steer clear of Baby's Nameed a Bad Things. They are unbelievable crude and snarky.

I actually really like three of the names. In order, they are:
Paola
Olivia
Isabel
Vega

Edited to add: My only hang up is spelling. While some creativity is nice, too much begins to look silly. The spellings you have here look very nice.

19. I can only speak in honesty - I don't like any of them.
Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 11:47 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Vega sounds like a made up California name for parents with a collective IQ of 98 and blond hair, who only eat raw food and surf a lot in between their occasional weekends selling bead jewelery and space-based mobiles at grateful dead tribute band concerts.

Isabel is just old and boring and not very inspiring.

Paola sounds like a misguided white American leftist trying to be hip-by-giving-their-kid-a-foriegn-name and, sadly, misunderstanding that Pollo is not a name, but the word for "chicken", and then misspelling it thinking it's a boy's name being creatively and gender-benderingly applied to a girl, and thus instead of ending in 'o' you've changed the ending to the feminine 'a'. Or, variously, it just looks like one of those modern moronic "respellings" of perfectly good names (Paula to Paola) in some vain and uncreative attempt to redeem one's empty life by seeming "creative" with a name spelling change, but instead coming across like a clueless drip who impresses no one but the incompetent and vapid. (And yes, I do realize that paolo is a legitimate Spanish name - it still doesn't make it a good name, unless you are, in fact, Spanish)

Olivia - not so bad a name, but not one of my favorite names, either. Of the four, this is the best.

Just being honest.

Not to say that you can't use the names, and name your child whatever you want. Just offering, because you asked, what I think of the names.

26. Honestly...
I'm not a huge fan of any of them.

Vega really does remind me of the car, and I wasn't even alive when it was around.

Isobel is my grandmother's name, and she hates it so much (because it makes her sound OLD) that she goes by her middle name...and would slap you if you ever called her Isobel.

Paola...seriously, I started singing "We Didn't Start the Fire" in my head. You know, the verse that goes "payola and Kennedy..."? Perhaps I'm pronouncing it wrong, but I've got to say, most other people will too.

Olivia, I kind of like, but as other people have pointed out, she'll be sharing that name with quite a few other kids in her preschool class.

Cassiopia
Carina
Aurora
Artemis (Greek lunar goddess)
Diana (Roman lunar goddess)
Europa (moon of Jupiter)
Miranda (moon of Uranus-heh, heh)
Callisto (moon of Jupiter)

Besides for the fact that it's the name of a car,

Then the kids wouldn't call her "Payola," would they? Wasn't there a Spanish princess by that name who married a Belgian prince? (My late great-grandmother used to read German celebrity gossip magazines and they were full of the doings of European royalty.) If you're not in Spain, how about spelling it "Paula?"

Isabel. Also okay for Spain, but I think of it as a "granny" name.

Olivia. No way! It's a lovely name, but it's the name of the moment, and there will be six of them in her kindergarten class, just as there were six of (Lydia Leftcoast's real name) living on the hallway in my freshman dorm.

Vega. YUCK, for the reasons mentioned above.

There are lots of beautiful Spanish names, if that's what you want.

67. Yes, I do currently live in Spain...
Why does everyone hate Vega so much? Interesting.

68. Aside from being the name of a crappy car, it means
"plain" (as in "Great Plains") in Spanish. Do you want Spaniards thinking of your daughter as a flat piece of land?

70. Well, it is also synonymous with "Fertile Valley", and "Meadow"...

...On 2nd thought, I'm not sure I'd want people thinking of my daughter as a "Fertile Valley" either. But, the Vega thing actually began with the show
"Who wants to be a Millionaire?" There was a question that read, "What does Las Vegas mean in Spanish". The answer was "The Meadows". And, being
a sopranos fan, I've always liked the name Meadow. So, that's where that started.

74. Especially if they associate the name with "vegan"
:-)

Don't be surprised if Spanish people stare or giggle when you tell them your daughter's name.

75. I was thinking of that too.
And y'know, the kids in school are going to call her "vegetable".

You always have to think SO carefully about your baby's name---not just what sounds pleasing to
YOUR ears now, but how the name might affect the child's life.

So many names are beautiful, but it's usually
wiser to stay with a classic.

69. Isabel is very nice
one of my daughters is named Annabel, so I like those "bell" names.....

It's a lot harder to be 100% sure it's a girl than it is a boy....when we found out our son's gender in utero...the technician entered "scud missile" and put an arrow in to point out the boy's protrusion..... Our daughters were harder to figure out....and they still are.

There's something about it. It rolls, and it has a flow. I really like it, and so does Mrs. ALiberalSailor. Thanks much for all your input.

79. Guess you knew which name you really wanted, but it was
still enjoyable to see all of the posts, eh? And, you still have time to change your minds before the documents have to be signed! I still vote for Isabel!

76. If you name her Isabel, she's gonna be called "Izzie". I'd go with Olivia.
Just my 2¢.
