Currently employed at large teaching hospital. I love taking care of people, but nursing as a whole is a profession in crisis. Part-time graduate student so I can be more autonomous. Mother, wife, laundry wench, grocery-getter, costume seamstress, party planner, boo-boo healer, dog walker, etc.

14. Lawyer
I took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. It's a profession, and not a job. It's not a matter of liking it. I am, pretty much, compelled to do what I do.

But if you believe that you owe a duty of public service, being a lawyer is a way to do that and still pay the bills.

24. With an MBA, you might consider tax law.
Tax attorneys are a special breed. In fact, tax law is about the only kind of law I'm not eligible to practice because the requirements are more extensive.

But yes, you can make a difference as an attorney, and that's rewarding. Good luck with your choice of school. The cost of a law degree has increased dramatically over the last several years.

29. That's the catch of it
I like my paycheck too much right now to sacrifice it to go on to law school. As a matter of fact, my wife and son couldn't survive on her salary alone or for that matter,a significant cut in mine. Welcome to Bush's America, eh?

My company keeps talking about establishing something in-house, so I'm hoping they look from within for people that are qualified and want to pursue this path.

37. Retired/disabled mail carrier, and former business owner.
Welcome to DU

I sold my business when I got burned out on it. It was still profitable, but I just didn't want to do it anymore. I felt that sooner or later the quality of my work and then the clients would suffer from my discontent.

My father worked in the auto business. He was a very skilled upholsterer. His work in antiques and custom autos won him fame in the industry. Some of his vehicles won grand national championships. One was on display in a Museum in Boston.

The editor of Car Craft magazine delivered his eulogy.

Enjoy DU. I remember when I was a newbie. Some viewed me with a bit of suspicion, but over time they got to know me and the suspicion evaporated. It takes a few posts to establish your street cred. Some of us still have on our war paint of the midterms, and will take a bit to decompress.

So enjoy, have fun, and become part of this wild and wonderful community.

73. you just started, right?
I loved law school, HATED the practice of law. HATED IT. Be very thoughtful about where you work once you graduate... I was in big-firm corporate practice and wasn't sure I'd get out with my sanity intact.

Then again, you might thrive on such a practice -

85. No big firm for me either...
I'd consider doing a summer there (not that I expect to have that option, but it's quick $$ and it's not forever) but I don't think I'd be at all happy billing 2400 hours a year just to make some rich guy I've never met richer. (If I'm going to be working long hours, I want to do it for something I believe in.)

I'm a 1L, but luckily, I will graduate with very little (or no) debt, so I can be picky. I don't need the golden handcuffs.

69. Media Representative
I call businesses in western Canada, and ask them to sponsor public awareness/service messages on the radio for various charities. I consider it combining altruism with capitalism. It's quite fulfilling - both emotionally (appeals to my squishy, bleeding-heart liberal side) and financially (appeals to my need-to-pay-the-bills side). heeee.

70. I'm in the food technology department at a food manufacturer
We are a relatviely small company competing at a big company level. There are only three of us in the department and I am the one primarily responsible for product development. It is rather stressful because I did not work in product development before and did not work with the products that our company produces or most of the ingredients. I have worked there for five months and finally it is starting to come together for me. I hope that I can continue to get better at it.
The work environment aside from that isn't ideal either, but maybe it will get better. If not, if I can hang on and develop more in my job, I probably could get a good job that pays well from a bigger company in a few years.
Personally, I'd rather be writing in some way, shape, or form but I am ridiculously inconsistent no matter how much I write. I don't think that has as much income potential as being a food scientist does either in most cases.

78. I work for my husband oddly enough
He started a non profit business association and I help with the marketing and PR. It scares the crap out of me because I'm learning as I go but it's a lot of fun. I was afraid that working for my husband would be a serious problem (it took me a year to finally accept his offer for the job) but like everything else we do together, it feels like a true partnership. Plus I get to sexually harass him and not get sued for it. :D

Welcome to DU newworld :hi:

81. Self-employed legal transcriptionist
I love it. After 25 years working as a legal secretary and paralegal and dealing with attorneys every day, it's a real joy to sit down here in my little office all by myself just doing brainless typing. It's kind of like watching CSI or Law & Order - in my ears and out my fingers.

83. Veterinarian.
I own my practice - a small storefront clinic. It is very tiny (only 4 of us total) and I have to wear a lot of hats - doctor, administrator, office manager, inventory maintenance, equipment repair, etc. Lots for me to do, but it's much more rewarding than my previous career as a chemist.

Most of the time I like what I do, but there are times, like during this past election season, when I wish I had more time to do what I'd like to be doing. I worked on a campaign as a volunteer in my spare time, but wish I could have done it all the time instead of having to go to work.

102. Middle School
is where the sweet kids turn mean. Some/most mellow out by High School but those tweener years - yuck!

One advantage with my kid is that because he has autism, even at almost twelve years old, he has the demeanor of a child much younger and because he has little interest in his peer group, he doesn't feel the peer pressure that becomes so prevalent at that stage.

103. I'm a registered nurse
I totally agree with the other nurse on this discussion. I love my job (labor and delivery) but our profession is in a lot of trouble. Big mess for which there doesn't seem to be any good answers. And while I have done quite a bit of travel nursing in my day (13 week temp jobs) I do not see relying on travelling nurses as constituting a solution.

Trying to pass yourselves off as productive tax paying Americans in several different avenues of employment. You all are evil liberals who post on DU. I'm retired Navy. I'm a bum with a lot of time to research this stuff.
