Poll question: Ford Mustang (minor dialup warning)
The other week (you know, during the Republican era), I ran a poll about what you would do if you won $20 million in the lottery. Two separate people replied that they would get a '69 Mustang. I thought this was curious because I always thought that car people considered the '69 to be pretty much the automotive equivalent of the antichrist. (Not criticising the two people making this reply, of course.) So which is your favorite?

More than anybody would ever want to know about Mustangs here: http://www.mustangspecs.com/timeline.shtml (but I hit horrible lags there; might just be me, though. I've been having trouble all over the Internets all day.)

I'm trying to use only pics of stock models, but this is taking years and the effort is all out of proportion to the likely response. So if a Shelby Cobra slips in there somewhere, try to bear with it.

1. Although I voted '64
I'd prefer a pickup, say a '52 Merc.

5. None taken. I'm pretty ambivalent about them myself
My uncle had a '64 when I was a tiny tot. Though it was the coolest car in the world at the time (I was maybe 5 (and it was three years old) before I got to play in it), they seem a little odd-looking in retrospect.

There is, however, a slot to vote for the current Mustang if you're so inclined.

3. I'd go with the '65, actually - but that's a quibble
Nice photo-essay - it certainly illustrates the travesty that was the 1970's (as far as Mustangs were concerned, anyway)...

9. On the one hand, the smaller ones look horrible...
on the other, as I've noted before, every time Ford makes the Mustang significantly larger, oil prices at least triple (or is that treble?). So I guess we should hope for a miniature Mustang III.:)

4. I had forgotten how truly awful the '79 was
"Let's take all the curves out, make it less sexy, more like an Escort." The design team should have been given brooms and told to sweep the assembly line floor.

I like the '67's and '68's best.

7. I had a high school coach who had a 1983 Mustang
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 02:04 PM by LSdemocrat
He'd drive us to competitions, so once or twice a year the subject of what car he drove would come up. Generally those conversations would go like this:

Student: What kind of car do you drive?
Coach: An old Mustang.
Student: Cool. What year?
Coach: 1983.
Student: Oh.
Coach: Yeah, I know. I actually leave it unlocked most of the time hoping it gets stolen.

10. '67, and believ it or not, '84.
84 because it looked like shit, but if you tweaked it right, it would blow you off the road.
I love sleepers.

11. The '69 was a righteous automobile! Mach-1, Boss 429, Cobra Jet, GT350/500
Man, what a freakin' year!

'69 was also a great year for GM, too. The Camaro had the Z28, SS396, etc (I believe the Yenko was available this year). The Corvette with the L88, 427 power. The GTO had the Judge.

The Road Runner 440, Super Bee six pack and the Charger 500 were available from Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth.

What a time!

16. Since the '65 Fastback isn't on there, I went with the '71...BUT the Fastback
is the only one I would spend money on:

MrG had one when we were first dating at 18... He let me sit in it...once. :hi:

19. What about the Mustang II ??
#1 on the list of worst car mistakes ever made.

How do you ruin a great classic muscle car? Put the new version on a Pinto chassis. It sucks worse than a Yugo or Gremlin.

22. C'mon... the '68 GT Fastback was good enough for Steve McQueen:
Of course, instead of the heavy old 390, I'd put a modern, injected 347 stroker in mine, with a T5 and maybe even a Rausch supercharger.

Highland Green with Torque-Flite wheels and a turn-signal hood, or I won't take it.

24. No '67?
No mention of the '68 428 Cobra Jet?

No mention of the Boss 429, 302 or 351 (special engine/car pakages)?

The 1965 intorduction of the 3/4 fastback?

There were also the Shelbys and the factory specials like the California Special, the High Country Special, the Tornado Twisters.

Assume the Mach and GTs as trim packages for their respective years.

When you talk about Mustangs, you are talking about a whole lotta cars!

25. So far I've owned a 66, two 67's, a 78, an 89 and an 05...
The 2005 rag top is at the top of my list but I still have a soft spot in my heart for the first one, a 67 notch back with a 289 V8.
