which makes it even earlier than Pogo which did not begin until 1943.
Kelly took up where Herriman left off.

And Doonesbury, original Bloom County and the Far Side (Gary Larson is a fellow alumnus) but there was just something about Calvin that spoke to me. His musings about death and dying with the baby raccoon series was surprisingly moving for a mere comic strip.

Here is a Far Side I bet no one here has ever seen. Gary designed the cover of our homecoming football program in 1997:

I went home a few weekends ago, and found all of my old C&H Treasury books, as well as the Peanuts collections from when I was a little kid. I re-read all of the Peanuts books, and was struck by how melancholy the feel of that strip was. Charlie Brown's hopefulness in the face of near-constant defeat is unusual...

I do have a space in my heart for Peanuts, it has to be said. But you look back on it, and it's just not very funny! The Far Side, on the other hand: funny. Bloom County was funny too.

Peanuts, not so much. And yet, like the Dude, it abides. So there's got to be something there.
