3. Krazy Kat #1, Pogo # 2
Krazy Kat started it all.
Also from Wikipedia
"Krazy Kat is a comic strip created by George Herriman that appeared in U.S. newspapers between 1913 and 1944,"
which makes it even earlier than Pogo which did not begin until 1943.
Kelly took up where Herriman left off.

Then Calvin and Hobbes #3

13. Greetings fellow Pynchon fans!
I too prefer Gravity's Rainbow over Lot 49, but let's not quibble! He's amazing.

8. Not only that but the desription on Amazon is written by Pynchon
here

"Let the reader decide, let the reader beware. Good luck.

--Thomas Pynchon"

Personally, I don't think it's off topic given Pynchon's love of comics.

That reminds me, I need to pre-order ....

20. My top three
Doonesbury -I'd put this at number 1 because of scope and longevity

2 and 3 would be a tossup between Calvin and Hobbes and Bloom County. Though all Berke Breathed attempts after Bloom County were just pale rehashings.

28. I love Red Meat - it's so twisted
And Doonesbury, original Bloom County and the Far Side (Gary Larson is a fellow alumnus) but there was just something about Calvin that spoke to me. His musings about death and dying with the baby raccoon series was surprisingly moving for a mere comic strip.

Here is a Far Side I bet no one here has ever seen. Gary designed the cover of our homecoming football program in 1997:

27. It's definitely way up there...
I went home a few weekends ago, and found all of my old C&H Treasury books, as well as the Peanuts collections from when I was a little kid. I re-read all of the Peanuts books, and was struck by how melancholy the feel of that strip was. Charlie Brown's hopefulness in the face of near-constant defeat is unusual...

30. 'Peanuts' was around for more than 50 years
It was published all over the world and it had more influence on society than virtually any other pop-culture icon.

No contest.

31. That it could achieve all this and still yet not be the least bit funny
is indeed noteworthy.

I do have a space in my heart for Peanuts, it has to be said. But you look back on it, and it's just not very funny! The Far Side, on the other hand: funny. Bloom County was funny too.

Peanuts, not so much. And yet, like the Dude, it abides. So there's got to be something there.

I do like Peanuts, and I'm glad it exists, but I also sometimes wonder at its popularity and longevity.

32. YES.
I've been a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan since I was about eight or nine years old. I have:

The Essential Calvin and Hobbes (compilation of Calvin and Hobbes and Something Under the Bed is Drooling) (first one I got, recieved for Christmas in either 1987 or 1988)
The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes (compilation of Yukon Ho! and Weirdos from Another Planet)
The Revenge of the Baby-Sat
Scientific Progress Goes "Boink"
Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons
There's Treasure Everywhere
The Days are Just Packed
Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat
It's a Magical World (for some reason, though, there are about 30 pages missing!)
The Calvin and Hobbes 10th Anniversary Book
I also used to have The Calvin and Hobbes Lazy Sunday Book, but I lost it when we moved.

So, except for the 30 or so pages that are missing from IAMW, I have every strip.

34. At least in the top 3
Doonesbury is up there and perhaps "Over the Hedge" as the third.

Dilbert is up there but not quiet in the top 3.
