My Razorbacks whipped the Vols 31-14. 31-7 would have looked better, but they scored on our walk-ons in the last qtr.

Next Week:

4. I saw that - congrats to the SK!
I looked at the poll just now, the Hogs moved up to #5. Maybe we'll meet in a bowl game!

I don't know what will happen if we win at Miss. State, beat LSU in Little Rock and then beat Florida in the SEC championship game... it might get as serious as playing for a national title. Who knows?

5. So glad you asked
I went to my first Central Michigan game since I left there in 1981 and the Chippewas downed Western Michigan (our arch-rivals, to put it mildly), 31-7. With the win, the Chips captured the Mid-American Conference West Division title and guaranteed themselves a slot in the conference championship game at Detroit Nov. 30 (probably against Ohio University).
The game time temperature was 38 degrees with a wind from the north at gale force. It was also raining torrentially. It was so cold and wet my friend and I spend the second half out in the parking lot in a nice, warm, dry SUV. The attendance was a school-record 30,026, about 26 of whom were still in the stands at the end.
The championship game is at Ford Field. Dry, 72 degrees, and, yes, we'll be there.

47. Well, EMU is someone we have to beat to win the conference
But CMU/WMU hatred goes back forever and is pitched at a level like Texas/Oklahoma or Michigan/Ohio State or USC/UCLA. We can't stand them and they sure can't stand us either.
To give you an idea, I saw a bunch of students running around campus Friday with tee shirts which read: (on the front) "FUCK WESTERN" and (on the back) "AND THE BRONCO THEY RODE IN ON."
Tasteless, for sure, and this 50-year-old (but still entirely juvenile) Chippewa wants one real, real bad. My friend said they were for sale in the student bookstore, but I sure didn't see 'em (I mean, I had my credit card out and everything).
Anyhow, because of the way the scheduling works, we don't play Eastern every year (though I think Western does). But there's nothing personal in that competition like there is with Western.
John
Oh, and Central is 15-1-1 against WMU at Mount Pleasant (our home) since 1975. But we'd hate 'em just as much if we were 1-15-1 over that stretch. Maybe even more, if such a thing is possible (and it isn't).
Fire Up, Chips!!

62. CMU almost always kicks our ass!
But at least we Broncos aren't crybabies, like the Spartans.

My sister went to MSU, and is totally ridiculous about UM. She would rather see them lose than her team win, which is sad. She gets angry when I point out that MSU isn't even really Michigan's rival, OSU is. When I told her that in football, Michigan has won the matchup with MSU 2/3 of the time, she said that was a lie. I said I got the statistic out of the Detroit Free Press, and she said they were lying. Crybabies is what the Spartans are, at least about football.

65. Hi noonwitch -- you're right about the Broncos
When I say we "hate" the Broncos, you know what I mean -- since I was at CMU, they've expanded the stadium and, it seems to me, flip-flopped the respective sides of the field. What I swear used to be the home side back in my student days (and, at 50, I may well just be going senile) is now the visitors side.
Hence, I found myself surrounded by fans in brown-and-gold, and it wasn't like any fights broke out (yes -- some general snottiness and cute-ass comments, which are to be expected and, even, welcomed).
It's a great rivalry with no love lost either way and, of course, we play next year at Kalamazoo -- where we don't do nearly as well.
Now -- and this comes as a shock to almost all my college football-following buddies -- I don't give a damn about the Michigan/Michigan State rivalry. They're always trying to drag me into the annual debate and I simply don't care. I usually root for whichever team has the better chance of winning the Big Ten title but, besides for that, I couldn't care less.
I hope Michigan beats Ohio State this coming Saturday but, if they don't, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. The Chippewas beat Western, we're undefeated in the MAC and heading to the championship game (and, with a little luck, a bowl game too), and that's plenty good enough for me.
Hope to see you next year at K'zoo. Yes, it's a big rivalry -- but I know several Western alumni personally and they're generally swell people. That goes double for you, of course.
John
Wish us luck against Ohio University -- if that doesn't go against your principles.

:P

Alumni? Not happy. Not even in the neighborhood of happy. I've never heard boos at Kyle Field. Ever. Until yesterday. It wasn't the players, it was that shitty first half and the non-aggressive play-calling. If it weren't for four big plays, I doubt we'd have scored. This stupid gimmick offense we have doesn't work if the other guys can run.

oooh, the time-honored cop-out of schools with shitty football. "But we're a basketball school!"

Well, Nebraska will *never* claim to be that. But we ARE a volleyball school. And we're workin' on that football thing. ;)

As for unagressive playcalling, I understand the frustration. We probably could have beat USC if we would have at least *tried* to score.

But again, probably and almost don't put a w in the win column. If only it did, I could claim that we should have beaten both USC and Texas. But nope. We lost, fair and square.

46. No, we lost because we made mistakes at the end of the game.
1. RB going out of bounds.
2. Playing prevent defense on the last drive after not allowing a point the whole second half.
3. Roughing the passer.

We're just doomed to football mediocrity. This was my first game since 1989 (shit I'm old), and it was my last for a long time. I only went because it's free.

Men's basketball #13 in the country. Football? Yeah. We're also a women's soccer school. Big championships are getting old. ;)

48. Actually, you lost
because you didn't figure out how to beat us until after we'd already scored 21 points.

I just don't buy "well, but..." from anybody, including Husker fans. But nothing. It wouldn't have come down to the last 5 minutes of the game if you'd been ahead by more than 6 points before that. The game isn't about the end of the game. It's about all 4 quarters. I'm not trying to pick on you, I said the very same thing to people who bitched about the Huskers losing to Texas.

69. That's our pattern all year.
Every time we played an above average opponent, it's taken the defense at least a quarter to figure out what is being done to them.

It seemed as though through the whole first half, our guys looked as though they didn't watch a second of film.

59. Yeah...
and somehow you managed to make my point.

Our play calling WAS boring. That was exactly my point. Our coaches decided to play the game so that there was no way we could be humiliated rather than actually bringing our defense.

I was there. I saw the entire field. Your secondary wasn't covering our wide receivers for shit. So yeah, if we would have opened up our offense and actually thrown the ball we damn well could have beat you.

It's not like you totally kicked our ass. And like you said yourself, we basically didn't even play on offense.

Gates fired RC because he couldn't recruit and the team didn't perform well. As much as I like RC as a human being, he wasn't getting it done. My first response when Fran was hired was, "What a dick he was to his players at Alabama. That shitty karma will follow him here."

Actually, I want a younger, more honest version of Jackie Sherrill. I want a coach like Billy Gillispie is for the hoops team. Aggressive, innovative, and someone who gets his team to over-perform.

I'm aware of the criticism directed at RC his last few years; I just didn't (and don't) agree.

We certainly don't need Franchione, though. Wouldn't mind a clean version of Sherrill, either--although he was a dick his own self...got an an elevater with him at Rudder one day when I was at A&M, and just kind of reflexively smiled and said "hi," as I do to pretty much anybody. He glared at me and didn't say a word. Asshole.

RAW STORY
Published: Monday October 30, 2006

Speaking on Monday afternoon at a rally held at Georgia Southern University to support Max Burn's bid for Congress, President Bush insisted that "the Democrat (sic) approach in Iraq comes down to this: the terrorists win and America loses."

While "the Democrat (sic) goal is to get out of Iraq," Bush told the crowd of supporters that "the Republican goal is to win in Iraq."

30. My College Team? UT? Not Worth A Damn, Acftually

Picked off by Kansas State, big time.

Oh, well. Like I keep telling my wife and fellow UT grad, who follows college football a lot closer than I do: those who pin their hopes and happiness on a bunch of 19-year old college kids must expect to be disappointed....

37. How are we
supposed to avenge our loss to you in the Big 12 Championship if you go around getting your ass kicked by the likes of Kansas State?

Geez.

who still hope to play for a national championship! ALL the analysts said that the pollsters would not & should not hold the Oregon "loss" against the Sooners. Short memories.

89. yeah, that really is coming back to haunt them
If it weren't for that fiasco, OU would clearly be in line for an at-large bid in a BCS bowl. As it is, it's still possible, but a couple of teams up the ladder will have to lose. :grr:

57. I went to UW-La Crosse and graduated in 1975.
I went to more Badger games than La Crosse games. The park I hung out at during the summers when I was in high school had a director who was one of the co-captains when they weren't really winning any games. Funny thing is that back then they always seemed to play Ohio State very tough. They still lost, but played them tough.

And lost 27-13. That's where the '1' in 10-1 comes from.

You had to ask! UMaine rallied back from a 10-0 fourth quarter score only to lose 10-9 to UMass on a missed extra point attempt in the closing minutes. D'oh! D'oh! D'oh!

And then the Pats coughed one up to the Jets!

And then UMaine's #1 ranked hockey team got their ass Kicked by arch rival University of No Hardware!

Craptacular sports weekend for bluedigger!

At least the Tide beat the spread, but that's little compensation. I think they play Auburn next week. That should be an easy win....right? lol

Hawai'i 61, La. Tech 17. The nation's top passing offense hangs 60+ on another hapless WAC member for the third week in a row.

Yet the 8-2 Warriors, who have gone down only at Alabama and at Boise State, remain unranked. :eyes:

73. Oh, you meant my alma mater.
They do still have a football team, for nostalgia's sake at least, but it pissed away a double-digit lead, at home, to Princeton; in years when The Game (that would be Hahvahd) is at Cambridge, the Princeton game is the one that brings all the alums back to New Haven. Eurghh. :puke:

74. North Dakota State THROTTLED Cal-Poly 51-14
Edited on Mon Nov-13-06 11:30 PM by SmileyBoy
NDSU improves its record to 9-1 (the lone loss being a 1-point loss on a last-second blocked FG at Minnesota).

Next week: The Bison host the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in front of an expected sellout crowd of over 19,000 to play for not only the Great West Conference Championship, but the Dakota Marker trophy.

GO BISON!!!
