where you have to get down on your hands and knees and beg for friends (paraphrase from "The Pigman"). Lotta people are lonesome and wanna go where everybody knows their username, or even where they can hang with a few casual friends. Especially if they can do it from the safety and comfort of their own home, or when they feel like killing time at work (:eyes:). Also there are many wanna-be writers in this world, looking for an outlet to express themselves and show off their amazing vocabulary and extensive knowledge of both particle physics and Star-Trek trivia.

12. Well, you are right...one can never have too many friends..

..but there are many people, here and participating on other forums, who are very intelligent and good-looking...and can have all the "real life" friends they want. The question I ask sometimes is: Do they really want real-life friends? Well, yes and no...I could discuss this at length but it would be boring. ;-)

I agree with the wannaa-be writers..and needing an outlet, etc.

23. on the one hand, being intelligent does not always make you friends

On the other, if you are good-looking, you get alot of people who will pretend to be your friend, so it is probably nice to just have your ideas listened to without having to wonder if they are using you somehow or if the relationship will get complicated. DU, unlike a real-life friend, is something you can access on your own schedule. It never intrudes. It can't, unless you give out your phone number. It's an instant hang out.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with datasuspect, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
