THIS IS ONE FRIGGIN' SCARY NIGHT IN PORTLAND, OR...AND WASHINGTON STATE.
Edited on Mon Nov-13-06 12:33 AM by Radio_Lady
Just had a cable power loss and shut down of my computer. I'm sitting here with a flashlight in my hand. We've got a wailing wind and all kinds of debris blowing around...

Please, just give us a hail to whatever Supreme Being(s) you believe in.

In peace (wherever it may be this evening), Radio_Lady and Grampa

5. Thanks, Lex. I'm afraid to go upstairs to the bedrooms.
I haven't heard winds so strong since we lived in Florida -- during hurricane season.

I hope those 60 - 80 year old Douglas fir trees stay standing. Prevailing winds might bring one of them right down on us tonight.

..... <[shaking in my boots>]

9. Yes, here in NC we've weathered a few hurricanes too and
we always sleep downstairs and stay out of the upstairs bedrooms in case we get a tree through the roof.

Find the room in the house that is safest in case one of those Douglas firs comes down and make yourself a little nest to bed down there for the night.

I'll be sending good thoughts your way tonight!

12. Just read a Reader's Digest article last night about a couple that
sought shelter in their bathtub during a tornado. Gads! I'm really kind of scared!

Maybe I'll sleep under a desk here in the den, away from windows.

I'm not going to be able to sleep... I just know it.

Are you in a house or apartment, Seattle Girl?

17. A house.
Edited on Mon Nov-13-06 12:59 AM by SeattleGirl
My driveway is almost impossible to nagivate. It's sloped, and is not paved. I went to the store earlier, and I was slipping and sliding, and the wheels were spinning as I tried to drive up it after returning from the store. Almost as bad as driving on heavy, wet snow.

What about you? House or apartment?

18. Good. We're in a house also, built in 1998. So far, I heard one
crash outside, but can't see to investigate what it is. Maybe a branch?

The wind is prevailing from the south. Hard to know what will give with the ground so soaked.

Thinkin' about ya, Seattle Girl! I've got an appointment at 10:30 AM tomorrow morning.

8. Well, we were in Florida until Oct. 25th. It wasn't too bad when we
returned home, but November started here with a vengance. I heard that Seattle is on track for the rainiest November on record!

Still, I didn't do too well in the 90 degree temperature in Florida. At least, we're cool! Har-har-har-de-har!

10. The wind is just whistling away. If I go off suddenly, you'll know it was the electricity and/or
our cable service. It's underground, but who knows?

19. Well, we're in a relatively new development, but there are electrical substations
above ground around this area further to the east. Who knows exactly where the electricity comes from?

Anyway, good to have you folks here. I'm trying to keep my sanity.

In peace,

13. Do you have Waste Management pick up there? I'm sure they will
reschedule for another day if you call them and tell them you chose not to put your trash out.

They've done that for us here in Beaverton, during rainy and icy days.

It's too risky for YOU, much less your garbage!

29. We should be OK..
We don't have any big trees that could fall on the house.. We do have ones that could take out our utilities. I figure we should BBQ the expensive meat in the freezer before it goes bad (assuming we lose power)..

34. I've heard about that storm from a couple of people. Well, I'll just
have to go to bed and figure "if it's my time, it's my time..."

What else can you say about things like that?

People killed in an apartment building when a small plane crashes into the side of it...

Drunk driver kills Mom and two babies walking on a street...

Five people killed in head-on crash with truck that jumped over the median strip...

And that's just this month???

Is it God's will or what?

I have to get some rest.

Too many firs and oaks on their property to be safe. So everybody's bedding down in the basement rec room.

Here in SE, it's not too bad right now in this house built in 1912. I'm hoping all the leaves from the maples and sycamores will blow away by morning.

This wind is freaky.... I never did like the sound wind makes when it blows forcefully.

Luckily in the house we're living in now, the power lines are underground, so the chance of the power going out is slim to none.

42. Darn, I slept right through it.
Once, though, I drove back from Olympia during similar weather, with 60 mph + gusts. It was quite fun to watch the pines that line I-5 bend so much in the wind, and to see the tree tops snap off and crash to the crowded highway in front of me and behind me. Fortunately, all drivers in that squall were scared shitless and no major wrecks were encountered.

I think the storm last night did snap off another branch of my neighbor's brittle birch. My own mammoth Horse Chestnut tree remains intact and firmly rooted underneath a good bit of land.

I'm sure I'll get my turn for a power outage in the next ice storm.

The wind was really whipping around here, but luckily we never lost power. The worst storm I remember was Inauguration Day '93. I was living on the 12th floor and it was blowing so hard, a bunch of wood from a nearby construcion site went by the windows.

We've had so much rain our lawn is a mud pit.
