Authorities Seeking Suspects Who Killed, Dismembered A MANATEE!

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Authorities were looking for those responsible for mutilating a manatee whose corpse was found in the waters off Homestead.

Wildlife officials said it was one of the worst cases of abuse to a manatee they have seen.

Boaters in Biscayne National Park found the animal's body floating with its throat slit and flippers cut off.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were scheduled to conduct a necropsy Monday to determine what killed the gentle marine mammal. Wildlife officers believe it was killed late Thursday or early Friday.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the National Park Service.

State officials have proposed downgrading the manatee's status from endangered to threatened. An annual census found 3,116 manatees in Florida waters in February.

3. Gods, that is awful

Several years ago my husband and I took our recently adopted not quite 2 years old daughter to DisneyWorld so that one of my oldest friends in the world could meet her. She lives in the Ft. Myers area with her 2nd husband. We were in the Living Seas pavilion and my daughter was going bananas for the manatees. Friend's husband leans over the rail, looks at them and then says: "You know it would be so much cheaper for the government to let us drive our boats at whatever speeds we wanted to and if we kill manatees, we can just import them from South America."

It was so over the top that I just didn't know what to say and unfortunately I was not able to find a hungry shark to feed his ass to. Not wanting to cause problems I finally said that I didn't think that would work as the manatees from South America were a different type.

A year ago I managed to make a statement. My godson (said oldest friend's son) was getting married. My then 3 year old kidlet and I went down for the wedding. On our way through Orlando airport I stopped at the Seaworld store and got her the largest stuffed manatee that I could find. Daughter latched onto it immediately (a year and half later it is still her favorite stuffed animal) and carried it everywhere during the weekend, including to the rehearsal dinner and the wedding. Oldest friend muttered something about how of course everyone in Florida loves manatees (um, obviously not given this article) and her 2nd husband didn't say a word.

I've stood in front of that tank and watched the manatees for close to an hour, which is a long time to voluntarily stand in one spot in DisneyWorld.

Maybe you should have told Bubba that South American manatees didn't speak English, and therefore the government shouldn't invite them in to our country. Maybe he'd have agreed with you more.
