Yikes! (Let the Cylon, Terminator, etc...jokes begin)
"Samsung has partnered with Korea university and developed the machine-gun equipped robotic sentry. It is equipped with two cameras with zooming capabilities one for day time and one for infrared night vision. It has a sophisticated pattern recognition which can detect the difference between humans and trees, and a 5.5mm machine-gun. The robot also has a speaker to warn the intruder to surrender or get a perfect headshot. The robots will go on sale by 2007 for $ 200,000 and will be deployed on the border between North and South Korea."

1. Robocop II, anyone?
Wasn't that the premise/plot of that fantastic piece of cinema?

3. I think we're already being assimilated by the Borg
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 08:19 AM by NewJeffCT
I've seen a few women around the office walking around with wireless phones thingies... and, with the long hair, it almost looks like the microphone part of the phone is a Borg implant. That was my first thought the first time I saw it.

I'll see if I can find a pic.

This seems similar to what I've seen:

9. I'm guessing
A very well engineered push-up bra.

Possibly some silicone or saline, too.

6. This is a great bit:
"It has a sophisticated pattern recognition which can detect the difference between humans and trees..."

Well, now. That is sophisticated! Some nights I can't tell the difference between a urinal and a dumpster!

10. That was my reaction too! I was gonna get worried, but once I read that
the circuitry was capable of such precise discrimination I realized that nothing could possibly go wrong. I've got to assume that, if it can tell a person from a tree, it can also tell a bazooka-wielding maniac from a busload of children, right? Right?

Robots and machine guns are not a good combination. This will end up with somebody dead. Detecting the difference between humans and trees is fine, but can it detect the difference between invading saboteurs and a little lost kid? How about the difference between a saboteur and a soldier trying to defect from the North?

15. How about the difference between an enemy
and someone who does not speak the language. Or someone who is deaf. Or someone who is developmentally delayed. Or someone who is drunk and not coherent. Or someone....

But maybe not fatally shot.

14. Impossible. Violates the First Law of Robotics.
"A robot may not injure a human being, or though inaction allow a human being to come to harm."

This is, however, the rich man's dream, able to guard his estate against poor people without the need for actually employing anyone. There will be many legal challenges on behalf of the injured/dead, but it's an inevitable development.

17. Unfortunately I think Asimov was ahead of his time
not just with science and robotics, but with his appraisal of mankind. We will make robots to go to war. That is just an inevitability. Laws of Robotics will be out the window. And just wait until there is artificial intelligence.
