Please name beach music and surf songs (but no Beach Boys) -- need them for
my BIL's fiftieth birthday party. The theme is Hawaiian, and my sister's calling it

"ROSSII FIVE-0"

Need some beach music, some surf music, some Hawaiian music maybe.

On my list already:

Five-0 theme
Wipeout
Dead Man's Curve

Any ideas?

Thanks!

12. The 'ukulele version is by the late Bruddah IZ
it serves as our minister's intro on Sunday mornings!

IZ really didn't do much surfing stuff (he weighed over 700 lbs. when he died!) , but "Margarita", set in Tahiti, could work.

17. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Izzy)
Not just the gorgeous "Over the Rainbow" but some other fun stuff too:
- a Hawaiian "Gilligan's Island"
- a Hawaiian "Country Roads"
- Lots of other cool stuff.

We have "Facing Future" "N Dis Life" and "Alone in Iz World" - we're big Izzy fans from way back!

I'd also strongly recommend "Los Straitjackets", who play great hardcore surfrock, but with a real sense of humor. Amazing party music!!!!

10. Anything by Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Surfaris, Jan and Dean...
I'd also add "Rockaway Beach" by the Ramones, as well as their cover of "California Sun" if you want a more-rocking approach.

If you're looking for a more Polynesian approach, check out Les Baxter, Martin Denny, or any of the other late-1950s/early-1960s exotica stuff.

13. Jack Johnson: contemporary music from the capital of surf
to wit, O'ahu's North Shore.

A bit more mellow than the '60s "surf sound" you may be imagining, but he is one of the good guys, who runs the "Kokua (help) Festival" each year to support mainly environmental causes.

15. Oh, and in a non-musical vein,
there is said to be a Hawai'i-style bakery in Oxon Hill, which, if memory serves, is at least on your side of the area. Sen. Inouye's staffers all go there to get "local kine grindz"!

Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 02:17 PM by KamaAina
there are bound to be full-blown Hawai'i stores over there. Any place that has large numbers of Hawai'i expats will have at least one. They usually have full lines of local-style candies, snacks, drinks and so forth, and maybe even a cheap imitation grass skirt, if anyone's interested. :-)

This is really classic surf music. You can probably find samples at Amazon of some of the other great surf bands (like The Ventures) suggested by other posters as well.
