I'm back. Miss me?
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 08:37 PM by trof
Of COURSE you did!
:-)
I mean...what the hell did you do without your resident geezer?

Miz t. and I had to whip up to Boston EARLY on the morning after the election. Our daughter is having a rough time in her first trimester of her second pregnancy.
Barf city.
Just going to the grocery store makes her toss. Forget about food prep. They've been living on carry-out.
Can't even do laundry.
The smell of the soap "seems to trigger my gag reflex. Sure wasn't this bad the first time."
Poor babies.
Bummer.
Needed a heavy dose of MOM.
And dad was able to take care of a few of the ever present home repairs.
Yea me.

Anyway...so we missed all the celebrations, cork popping, general toasting of our good fortune, and related whoopee.
We were with you in spirit.

We flew.
Did I mention that flying sux?
Big Time?

I told Miz t. about being sure to use the quart sized baggie you have to put your 3 oz. or less tubes of toothpaste, deodorant, perfume, aftershave, etc. in.
She had a "better" container.
NO, it SHOULDN'T be "better". It has to be EXACTLY the same.
She was allowed to step out of line, go to the gift shop, buy an approved baggie for a quarter, dump her assorted cosmetics into it, and get back in the end of the line.
"A QUARTER! THEY CHARGED ME A FREAKING QUARTER FOR THE DAMNED BAGGIE!"

Coming out of Boston this morning, my carry-on set off the alarms.
"NEED A HAND SEARCH ON THIS BAG!" the guy at the X-ray machine said.
I thought "DAMN! It's the 12" dish brush I got at Ikea. I KNEW it wouldn't pass. Looks like some kind of weapon."
Nope. The inspector was holding up a little jar.
"It's my teeth." I offered.
"My partial upper."
She laughed and said "Oh, OK."
Whew. My teeth made it through.
Tonight, I EAT!

Did I mention that flying sux?
Big Time?

Anyway...it's nice to be back.
What'd I miss?
;-)

1. Welcome back, trof....
"flying sux" is ironic, coming from you.

I had a good experience on a short flight back in September (except for the long security lines at O'Hare). United even put me in Coach Plus, which was great for my 5' 10" body. Both ways. It was only to and from Grand Rapids, but....:D

I hope that the rest of your daughter's pregnancy goes better. My mother was that way, so she always told us.

2. Yeah, I know. I still remember the good ol' days of flight travel.
We kept the flight deck door open and folks could come up and watch and chat.
Gone forever.

3. I remember lots of legroom, too....
Even back in the cheap seats. 707s were great planes, though gas guzzlers.

5. I flew on my first RJ.
Regional Jet.
Tiny.
48 seats.
I felt a bit claustrophobic.
Me: "Can I have the window seat? I'll know what I'm looking at and you don't. I think I need a little ROOM."
Miz t.: "Sure. You can tell me where we are. I'm reading anyway."

I've crossed this continent so many times I have the map and the landmarks in my head.
"There's St. Louis and the arch!"
It wasn't so bad.

9. I once flew from Chicago to Springfield (and back)...
on a now-defunct airline called Air Illinois. It was a small turboprop out of Meigs Field. I could not walk down the aisle of the plane standing up straight. One of the attendants (this was 30 years ago) was wearing braces on her teeth.

Then there are the DeHavilland Herons I flew on in the Caribbean. The ones where your seat assignment is based on weight.

:scared:

I am sure that you have the country's airlanes memorized.

12. I remember Meigs.
On the lake.
I think it's closed now.
I couldn't stand up straight on the RJ.
Embraier.
Like a corporate jet.
But the seats were fairly comfortable.

17. We even had a lounge
back in the tail section - smoking and sipping! :hi:

And I never minded being called a 'stew'. :)

Hope the rest of your daughter's pregnancy is easier for her. :puke: is not the fun part!

19. On the DC-8?
Who did you fly for?
At TWA our 707s had a lounge as part of the first class section.
And I remember "The captain has now turned off the No Smoking sign..."
(And small packs of free sample cigarettes on your meal tray.)
Then "The captain has now turned off the No Smoking sign. If you are seated in a smoking section..."
And now "This is a no-smoking flight."

8 hours between my last smoke in Boston and my first in Pensacola.

25. American.
DC-8...I think. :)

First ever flight after graduating woke up in a Chicago blizzard. Went back to sleep. Disabused of notion "nobody flies in this weather" by incredulous phone call from Captain.
Used to go up to the cockpit for a smoke. Even on the ground.

Favorite trip was a Convair puddle jumper - DCF-CHI(Midway)- me, Captain & Engineer. Served Dinner 2x.

Got written up 2x for not wearing high heels to deboard passengers at 11 pm in Monterey, Mx.
3 write-ups = termination.

Green-roomed my fiance from DCF-LAX r/t twice!

The Good/Better Days, trof!

Since AAL got the dregs of TWA, I'm now an American "retiree".
We get on last.
But we still, sooner or later, get on.

I didn't make it to 'mandatory' retirement (by the 11th month of one's 30th year). But I imagine a few coins in my SS check originated in those skies. :)

18. Since you've been gone, I've been unable to eat, sleep or drink.
All I do is cry. No medications have a calming effect. I am pacing endlessly and have chewed through most of my shirts.

My family has been considering putting out a desperate appeal for you to return, but they are ambivalent about whether or not they want me to live. They are tired of me constantly talking about you, worrying about you, tired of the dreamy way with which I so obviously contemplate what you might be doing, what you might be wearing, who you are with, what you are thinking, saying, imagining...

She's eating crushed ice and popsicles to keep hydrated.

But her ob/gyn says she's doing fine.

30. Welcome back, trof! Your story made me laugh.
What good parents you are to go support your daughter in her time of need. I remember those days when I was pregnant with my second one. I was throwing up 6 or 7 times a day for about 5 weeks....plus I had a two year old at the time. Ugh. It was exhausting.

Good on ya, for helpin' out your kid.
