Have You Ever Driven While Over The DUI Limit?
Wondering. I have a feeling most drinkers have taken a chance once in a while.

I'm pretty sure I have done it several times which I have been much better about these days. But the truth is, I don't know exactly when I am over or under. I DO know when I'm DRUNK and would never get behind the wheel while 'smashed'. I know that's not the point, but I think driving 'buzzed' is statistically much less dangerous than driving 'drunk' (not to mention driving while tired).

2. I don't drive...
But I bike over the limit all the time. I will probably do it again in about 15 minutes. I'm hungry.

5. I used to live near the beach and my roommate came up with the
idea that we would ride our bikes to the bars so that we wouldn't get a DUI coming home.

So we're riding our bikes home and my roommate takes a left onto the street before ours. We yell to him, "Sean -- that's not our street!" He looked around to answer us and ran right into a couple of trash cans set out by the street. We hear the crash and ride up to where he is and he is laying in a pile of garbage with his arm and shoulder all scraped up.

We were all serious at the time, but it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen!

22. I used to do that
I finally learned my lesson. No major injuries but I did wake up an ER and had no idea of how I got there. Trust me, you can buy a lot of cab rides for the price of one trip in an ambulance.

3. no. drove while stoned once though...
and that was the last time too. Forgot to turn my lights on. (small town, no traffic, thank god!) Cop pulled me over and gave me a warning. Never since. If you're high (from whatever) STAY HOME.

4. In high school and college I did...and I was lucky I never killed
anyone or killed myself.

I guess when you are 18, you think that nothing is going to happen to you...or, you just don't think.

I rarely drink now, but if I do, I've always got a designated driver.

6. No, but...
I've been an unofficial designated driver and had to have the drunks with me figure out where we were supposed to go. haha It's sad when your sense of direction is so bad that falling-down drunk people can find the way better than you can!

7. Yes, but not for many, many years.
Thank God I didn't get caught, and thank God even more that I didn't hurt myself or anyone else. These days, if I'm going to drink, it's at home. If going out with another, I am always the designated driver, which is totally cool with me.

8. Almost everyone who's a "boomer"..has
Way back when..it was no big deal. Of course there were not so many cars on the road, and the cars that were, were built like TANKS..not coke cans with plastic bumpers..

I once slid on ice (no alcohol involved), HIT the building and dug two holes into the concrete block..I just had a few scratches and sopme concrete dust on the "rocket-launchers" on my bumper..(61 Dodge) It hit hard enough for me to bang my forehead on the rear view mirror.. (no seat belts back then either)

9. Driving While Tired...
Yeah, I honestly think the most dangerous thing I have done behind the wheel was to drive while literally half asleep. Not cool.

As far as drinking and driving, yeah I definitely play roulette with my limit more than I should. Thank god it has been a long time since that has happened since I now live in walking distance of bars, so I can go drink without ever being in a car.

I remember some boomer age comedian saying that when he was a crime "Drinking and driving wasn't a crime, it was a HOBBY."

10. A few months ago, I was driving back to Seattle from Oregon.
When I hit Woodinville, just south of Portland, I got really really tired. So I took the exit, found the parking lot of a store, and did a half-hour power nap. Helped enormously, and I was able to finish the dirve wide awake.

11. Me, too
When it's to the point that you're testing how many seconds you can keep your eyes closed ("Hey, I've got the car pointed straight and the highway's going straight- what harm could there be?") at a time, you really shouldn't be on the road! I've definitely been there before. Drives home from graveyard shifts were some of my worst ones, though there were a few times I was driving to early-morning classes after half an hour or one hour of sleep where I was in a similar state.

14. LOL - Yep. Little 5 second "naps"
Oh man. I have to drive my girlfriend home about 100 miles each way every saturday night at about 2am. I've had to start taking LONG naps before I make that drive. Many times on the way home I'll get to that state where each 'blink' is like a little nap. And literally my eyes start shaking because they want to close so bad. Now I make sure I just stay in a hotel and come back in the morning if it is that bad.

15. Not in over 20 years
My best friend parked his car about 20 feet up a telephone pole on Christmas morning, 1985. He was the third member of my inner circle of friends, numbering about 15, to die that year. It was drug/alcohol related.

I was already a pretty firm believer in not drinking and driving before 1985, but I would occasionally drive after a few drinks. Not hammered, but not quite sober either. Never again.

RIP Troy. I love ya man.

24. My 21st birthday
most of which I don't remember. Tequila shots, lemon, and salt. I couldn't even smell tequila for the next ten years without feeling nauseous.

I drove home, out in the country, with my 15-year old brother. He said he had to keep grabbing the wheel. I was mortified the next day.

26. When I was young and stupid - yes
Actually most of the time my friend was the driver and I know she had done so too.

However, I quickly grew out of that state. It's too dangerous and too costly should I get busted. And in Delaware they can ticket you even if you're driving buzzed (registered with alcohol in your system but under the limit - it's like a speeding ticket and includes points)

27. Yes
many times actually. Not that I am proud of it but because of my body weight, legally if I have three drinks I am techincally over the legal limit.

I can control myself and I know my limits. I am an experienced drinker!

32. Driving "DRUNK" vs Drinking & Driving?
I've only really driven "drunk" maybe 2 or 3 times in my life. Most of the time, if I am that impaired I will def. stay off the road and sleep in my car or go to a coffee shop. Whatever I have to do. But I'm sure there's been times where I've had 3 beers or a couple of screwdrivers and still chanced it just to get home. Bad idea.

33. I've done it once in my life.
The designated driver crapped out on me and I was young. No excuses, though. I should have called a cab but I didn't, I drove home instead.

And I was absolutely terrified the entire time.

Never again. Ever.

37. Cost of a DUI in Minnesota: $10,000
http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=139581

"It will cost him $130 to get his car back. That'll be the least of his bills.

It will take another $700 for his license.

If he hires an attorney, it will cost about $2,500.

Fines and court fees will likely be another $1,000.

Insurance costs could increase as much as $6,000 over the next five years.

It could be a lot more.

The grand total will be at least $10,000."

38. Don't forget the cost of things like
Victim impact panels

Alcohol education classes

and, if you get caught at it more than once in Colorado, it's mandatory jail time. They can get work-release, but if they get work-release they have to pay for it. And if they manage to get a bed in a work-release facility, it costs something like 23.00/day. For 60 or 90 or 120 days. If they do work-release from CJC, it's less...maybe only 15.00/day? That adds up, and fast.

and, if you get caught more than twice in Colorado, you have to pay all the relicensing fees twice...first time to get your restricted license back (because they'll take it for two years) and the second time to get your regular license back after having a restricted license for a year. And you have to pay for the interlock device (a breathalizer) that's attached to your ignition for the year your license is restricted. And that runs another 500.00/year. Give or take.

It's not. worth. it. Even if you don't get caught, the potential for injuring someone else, which is something you'd have to live with for the rest of your life and you can't possibly put a price on, is too great.
