Why did I click on that breastfeeding thread in LBN? Why?
Now I'm furious. Bad way to start the day. :grr:

What the F@#$ is wrong with some people? I can imagine these archaic attitudes against breastfeeding on FreeRepublic, but here on DU? It's completely bewildering and appalling to me.

1. It's DU - at least here, 95% of the posts are pro-breastfeeding
I've seen this discussion elsewhere, and the "if she can breastfeed in public, why can I take a shit" type replies predominate.

It's a pretty appalling look into the average American mind.....

19. Yes, well...
a huge number of Americans are sexually perverse as a result of the intense sexualisation of the female breast in US culture over the past century; the titillating depictions of Hollywood starlets and models with overflowing C-cups have neutralised the actual function of breasts in the minds of much of the public (especially the male public).

arguing against public breastfeeding are women.

46. You know, in a way, that doesn't seem quite so strange as it sounds at first...
because an unfortunate side effect of all of this cultural fucked-upness about sexuality and femininity has been that far too many women have internalised the prejudices of sexual objectification (as someone once said, it's hard to fight an enemy who has outposts inside your head).

47. I agree, and that makes it all the more important to talk about.
And it makes it all the more important to "normalize" breastfeeding in the eyes of society. If today's children grow up hearing about breastfeeding and seeing it, they will accept it as normal.

It is a shame that we as women are trained to feel disgust at our own bodies in some way or another (whether it's breastfeeding, weight issues, wrinkles, or what-have-you).

That one's a deal-breaker. I'll talk to people who are against abortion, for the death penalty, or even Pro-Lieberman. I've actually read intelligent opinions I disagree with on those issues. (okay, maybe not pro-Lieberman...)

but what does it say about you as a human being if you're against breastfeeding?

41. Huh? If she's feeding an older baby, then it isn't likely to be hurting her.
I'm pretty knowledgeable about the subject, having done CEU's and breastfed both kids long term. Soreness usually happens at the beginning while the baby is learning to latch on and while the mother's hormones make her more sensitive. Once the latchon is good, the mom usually does pretty well unless there is another underlying problem.

And that BF was unhealthy because there were high levels of mercury in the milk. Also that it was "bad manners" to do it in public. Also that since they "paid a lot of money for an airline ticket" they shouldn't have to see it.

Mostly it's that (at least for me) some of us are astounded at the attention subjects like that muster. How many kids died in Darfur while that flamefest was going on? I hope a mod locked it.

There is an ongoing fight to protect the right to breastfeed in public. You'd be surprised at the opposition. And, like any serious topic with merit, it deserves its consideration for discussion on DU. Provided it doesn't turn into a flamewar, of course, which it's almost destined to, because of said opposition to breastfeeding in public.

20. See, here's the thing (and this is from a guy without kids)
Not being a mom, myself (and I never will be) I can't explain the nuances behind a mom feeding her child via human nipple except that naturally, when hungry said kiddo should be fed. Most folks, in threads like that, don't knee jerk their way into a response against breastfeeding without pole vaulting like an Olympic champion over all the facts. You know...facts. Facts like the woman was feeding the child whilst the plane was preparing to leave...meaning that leaving your seat would have been against the rules. It didn't say if the kid was crying because he she was hungry. So, what's worse...screaming kid or breastfeeding (a whole Lounge flamefest could ensue from that one)? Lastly, for the sake of all that has 2 or more brain cells to rub together, it's a frikkin breast. A boob, a pec, a tit...whatever. Are these same folks pissing up a flagpole when "art" shows a naked breast? Yeah, someone go dig up Matisse just so the anti-breastfeeders of the world can give him a punch in the face, would ya?

Tell you what folks that jump ugly (thanks, Redstone!) at the premise of breastfeeding...I better not f'ing see you at a baseball game eating a hot dog. As a vegan, I might find having that within my personal eyeshot to be obscene and toss a hissy right then and there. I'll complain and cry, tantrumating (my word) in the aisle until I crap myself, just like you seem to do over this topic. You don't NEED that hot dog RIGHT THEN AND THERE to maintain life, AND you have the option of eating it in the stadium lavatory. Now, go fuck yourselves and leave the moms and their kids the hell alone.

Rant over.

It was the stick of gum comment that did it.

I'm not going to post. But I will say that some of those posts are the most egregious examples of people spouting off about things they know nothing about that I've ever seen. Even basic knowledge of breastfeeding would have saved some of those people from looking like idiots. Others are probably beyond redemption.

31. I know. It's unbelievable.
I only hope that the popularity of breastfeeding will continue to grow (for the vast majority of mothers who can do it ... I know not all can, however). Eventually it will have to be a "so what?" type of function like it is in most cultures.

Sheesh.
