Tonight's SOUTH PARK episode: WTHLF did I just witness?
I'm serious. Matt and Trey are getting so out there with this latest season that it's getting unreal. You know you're not supposed to laugh, but you do it anyway because you don't have much choice. But dude, this episode was seriously fucked up.

Maybe not as fucked up as the infamous Scott Tenorman Must Die episode, but pretty fucked up nonetheless.

1. I think this was the darkest episode ever.
Scott Tenorman was crazy and it was a bit evil but you expect that from Cartman. This was just dark, dark humor. I have to admit I was laughing my ass off because I can go dark but I can see this one really offending people. Who makes fun of kids with cancer? The Steve Irwin jokes to piss off the people already pissed off were classic too.

3. My friend's little sister is currently in the last stages of leukemia.
He just left today to go attend to her and his family. She is in her final weeks. I sure as fucking hell hope he wasn't watching Comedy Central tonight.

Given that he's a very good friend of mine, and that I care about his well-being, I just couldn't laugh at this one. :(

2. I *loved* the episode
South Park keeps getting better and better, although I understand 100% that their type of humor isn't for everyone.

5. That was extremely messed-up.
The guy with the record player who only spoke in voice-overs was a stroke of genius.

6. Until recently, all episodes were available online
Bootlegged, of course, and uploaded to dailymotion.com.

That's when I started watching. I've never actually watched an episode on television.

7. As a Red Wings fan, I'm offended
It was beyond politically correct, making fun of little kids dying of cancer. I don't know how low you can go, and I'm someone who usually finds "South Park" to be funny.

9. Is that still on the air?
The show stopped being even mildly amusing in about the fourth season.

10. desperate... last 3 episodes really
Oooh, a real zinger to "The Mighty Ducks" school of moviemaking, and way to stick it to those 5 year olds with their fear of death and cancer. Pathetic... kept thinking of my baby sister who died from aplastic anemia before I was born, who probably had a lot of those same questions.

And the two-parter with Cartman going into the future with the feuding athiest groups and the sea otters? WTF? Some of the time travel stuff was funny, and the bit with Eric lying awake waiting for time to pass was pretty good, but the rest was just... pointless.

The only one from the last batch that sticks with me at all is the World of Warcraft episode. That was pretty brilliant.

14. It goes back to Cartoon Wars
Remember, when everybody in South Park was hiding their heads in the sand cause Family Guy was gonna show an uncensored image of Muhammad.

Ya can't cave in just cause some people might find it offensive, no one has the right to not be offended

18. Of course not
Just about everything can have shades of gray involved. War, murder, stealing, etc. But in this episode I don't think Matt and Trey were intending to make light of kids with cancer. It was just in keeping in line with their philosophy. Actually, it could be used as catharsis.

I remember reading this book, forgot the name of it, written by a Jew as a comedy about his time in a Nazi Concentration Camp. Also reminds me of my friend who works with special needs kids...and also does laugh out loud impressions of them.

The thing I think is this; if you can't find humor in the darkest things, the overwhelming sadness of it will kill you

Hope that clears things up a bit

16. Practically speaking, I don't think that's true.
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 02:34 PM by Pithlet
I do think that it is possible to stoop down to such a level that only mentally deranged or severely socially stunted people would find it funny. I'm not saying that South Park has ever been there, even with the kiddie cancer thing. I haven't watched the show in a few years. Sometimes certain subjects that on their face sound just awful can, with enough talent, be made funny. But, the darker the subject, the more talent required, and I think the talent required to make kids dying of cancer funny, well, I'm not sure that's even attainable. I'd have to see it to truly judge it. I could be wrong, but I'm betting the kids dying of cancer segment came across as a desperate attempt to shock.

19. Good lord, they've gone downhill.
Last night was a speed bump on their rapid fall. But that Buck Rogers spoof? WTF? And product placement? They used to make fun of shit like that.

21. How was this making fun of kids dying or cancer?
It was making fun of overwrought sports movies.

22. That one was my least favorite episode!
There have been other episodes which I did not care for but none stand out, this one will.
