A single nasturtium bloom on a vine
in my backyard, just before the hard freeze we had last week. It caught my eye and I went back into the house to get my camera and snap a pic. I have a hard time making these nasturium bloom, but this one climbed and climbed and finally gave me a bloom just before the freeze, which got it. Here it is in its glory:

The blooms and leaves are edible too on nasturium. They are very easy to grow from seeds and this pack I got from Target.

:hi:

Everything around here is pretty much dead.

3. Here in central NC we've had
one hard freeze. Many things in my garden will winter over nicely, but not the nasturtium. :(

My rosemary, thyme, and lavender plants will live on. I have a camellia bush on the side of the house that will bloom in December and the blooms look like this (from last year):

2. Great picture. Did you know they are edible?
The leaves have a peppery bite to them, but sometimes some people put tiny parts of the leaves in salads. Some fancy restaurants decorate the plates with the flowers (which are also edible, but I've never tasted one).

5. I've eaten both: they taste like watercress.
They're good!

6. Yes, I've tried a few leaves in salads
but don't really care for them.

Johnny-Jump-Ups and Pansies are edible too and are pretty on a plate, or frozen in ice cubes.
(Suddenly I've gone all Martha Stewart. )

8. Thank you very much . . .
the close up of the bloom is me weakly channelling Georgia O'Keeffee a bit, but oh well.

9. Wow! I've never seen a Nasturtium plant that big!

I grow some in a big planter and get a good number of blooms, but the plants never get longer than a foot or two. I didn't even know they were climbers. That's amazing!

10. Some definitely don't climb
just look on the packet to see if it says it will be a vine. I specifically looked for a climber and it really did climb!

Usually I grow the regular ones which don't climb.

I found the seed packet at Target. :hi:
