I just had to say this. I've lost two pals to this one and I am fucking pissed.

1. That's one I would agree with, for sure.

Kick.
I've been trying to slowly conditon my husband to this reality. He's only 29, but he will need to start in the next five to ten, at least.

2. BTDT
First by the finger, more recently by the blood test. (PSA?)

I'm fine.

5. Couldn't agree more. Simple PSA blood test saved my life...
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 07:20 AM by KrazyKat
My primary care doc gave me a PSA blood test "just for the hell of it" when I was 47. It was elevated, and I was referred to a urologist. The uro tracked it for 3 years, and did as many biopsies in that time -- he finally hit pay-dirt on the third biopsy.

The good news was that the cancer was caught about as early as possible, and was treated early (by radioactive seed implants). Now, all systems are go, everything's functioning A-OK, and my PSA is barely measurable.

The digital rectal exam (DRE) is a good and necessary part of any annual exam, but it may not reveal smaller cancers, which are only detectable by the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) that is being released into the bloodstream.

Although PCa is generally a slow-growing cancer, it can speed up without warning, and it's nothing to mess with. Dying from complications of PCa is not a pleasant way to go.

Have a DRE and your PSA level checked annually if you're 40-50...and earlier if you're African American or have a family history of cancer or prostate cancer.
