Dayum! Swapping RAM in a computer... |
|
I have a 512MB PC3200 module. I replaced it with two PC2700 modules.
So now I have a PC3200 module I can use for my main machine, which has 2GB of PC3200 already.
If I get another 512MB module, I can have 3GB of dual channel action.
The 512MB orphan is a Mushkin module. If I bought a PNY or Crucial brand 512MB module, would I be able to get away with it?

1. I see adverts that say "Are you fed up with being fragged by your system's slow RAM?" |
|
How the fuck can you tell? Who ever sits at their computer and yells "fuck! This thing's memory is too fucking slow!!"

2. Brand really doesn't matter much |
|
As long as the specs match. As long as all are PC3200, your RAM will run at top speed. PNY or Crucial will work fine, there are very few actual manufacturers of the actual chips used in RAM DIMMs.
Crucial is a good vendor, we buy RAM by the trayload from them at work. Out of hundreds of new and dozens of used "pulls" harvested from junked machines, I think I've had maybe two bad DIMMS of that brand, and one of those was an old PC100 yanked from a filthy PII box.
