Has anyone else seen "Grey Gardens"? |
|
This is an almost legendary documentary from the 1970's about two women...a mother and daughter who are also an aunt and cousin of Jacquiline Kennedy Onassis...who live in a filthy 29 room mansion in the Hamptons (the house seems to be filled with cats, plus raccoons) and the relationship between the mother and daughter. "Grey Gardens" has to be one of my very favorite films...a terrific look at two very unique women.

Did you catch the New Yorker piece a few months back about the rediscovery of the Marble Faun?
When I heard they were making a musical of the thing, I thought "blasphemy!" but apparently it's quite good, even to fans of the film.
And now the Maysles brothers are releasing a new DVD of more loosely assembled footage called "The Beales of Grey Gardens" or something like that.
Thanks for recommending that very worthy documentary.

I knew that the stage musical was made. But you know...when I watched it again last night, I thought...yeah, handled right, a stage musical definitely works. Big Edith, after all, was a singer in the 30's...and even when the documentary was made, as she was in her 80's...she still had traces of a quality singing voice. And little Edie's thinking of herself as a dancer...and just the whole themes of their lives...it does lend itself to being adapted as a musical.
Thanks for the info about the new DVD. The commentary on the original DVD...with the ending telephone call from Al Maysles to Edie Beale in 2000...is quite good. Nevertheless, I'll look for the new dvd.

Haven't seen it for a few years, but I've watched it a few times. My mom and I both love it. I should go up to Scarecrow and rent it one of these days; I bet Neil would like it too. Thanks for the reminder. I've got some time on my hands now, as you know. :D
