2. Well, we *are* cooking for a rather large crowd
I absolutely love to cook, and so does my domestic partner (ThinkBlue2006 here on DU). With my Mom unable to stand for long periods of time at the moment, the cooking fell to us this year. So we're going to give her the best Thanksgiving dinner EVAR. :D

3. Willing to share recipes?
The Country Style Sweet Baked Beans sound good. Well, it all sounds good..but I'd love to know how you make the beans. :)

4. Sure! It's really easy to make.
2 of the large (I think 16 ounce) cans of Bush's brand Country-Style beans
a pound of lean hamburger minced and browned
6-8 sliced beef hot dogs
5 slices of chopped cooked bacon
1/2 cup sauteed minced sweet onion
1 cup of packed light brown sugar (add more if you want them sweeter, I usually use almost 2 cups!)
1/2 cup of honey barbeque sauce
1/4 cup of ketchup
1/2 teaspoon of dry mustard powder
1 teaspoon of molasses
1 teaspoon Worchestershire sauce
and salt and pepper to taste

I put it all together into the crock pot, set it on "High", and cook it for about 4-5 hours, stirring every half hour or so. It's probably the simplest recipe of them all, actually! My Mom has made this for family cookouts and holiday dinners for so many years, I can't even imagine a holiday without it.

My recipes for Sweet Potato Casserole and Sausage Balls can be found on http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x5847939">this thread.

14. Thanks...
It sounds yummy, but more like an entree than side dish! I always look to add something different at each Thanksgiving dinner. I get bored making the same things every year.

15. You can always leave out the meat
I put it in mostly because that's the way my Mom always made it, and that's what the family expects. But it's just as good without the hamburger and hotdogs. :)

I'd leave the bacon in though--it brings a lovely smokiness to the flavor.

Green beans (not the yicky onion casserole, just straight up)with pumpkin pie for dessert. All completely homemade. And I thought that was overboard. ;)

On edit: Sounds delish. Have fun.

6. Our family is scattered all over the place
so when we get together (usually just twice a year--Thanksgiving and Christmas) we all chip in and make it really special.

Usually my Mom does the cooking and the food is a little more...simple. But she's ill this year, so we're hosting the big family to-do at our house instead, and I wanted to make it super-special.

Of course, now I have to spend the next 5 days detail-cleaning my house, clearing all the appliances and clutter off of the dining room sideboard, and figuring out where I'm going to get some more chairs. I'm tempted to inform my mother that she has to bring her dining room chairs with her when she comes, because we only have 4! lol

7. Hee hee...
That happens here at Christmas. I haul out the lemon oil and polish my brains out. :D

Have you checked out a Rent a Center? Lots of times they will rent out chairs on a daily basis.

I hope you have lots of fun. :hi:

9. I hope I manage to get everything done at the same time, lol
I've never done a BIG dinner like this by myself.

The Rent-A-Center thing wouldn't work for us--we spent $200 on groceries and supplies today (thankfully it wasn't *all* our money--everyone chipped in) so we're now pretty much broke for the week.

I wish we'd have gotten to the liquor store before my partner had to go to work. I have tons of cleaning to do tonight, and a Rum-and-Coke would go down really nice right about now. *sigh*

10. I miss the days of the package liquor stores that made deliveries...
Got any neighbors that you're close with and could borrow a cup of rum from? :)

12. I wish!
Unfortunately we're anti-social and we barely know our neighbors.

Any West Virginia DU'ers want to come bring Brandy a bottle of rum? :D

BLASPHEMER!

You don't have to like it, but you DO have to serve it.
;-)

edited for 'canned' green beans.
No 'fresh' need apply.
