So what's everyone doing for Thanksgiving, if anything?
Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 09:35 PM by Mountainman
We are having 21 members of family coming starting on Tues and staying for the weekend. Since we moved to the mountains our place has been the place to meet on Thanksgiving. Sort of "over the river and through the woods" kind of thinking I guess.

We've been sprucing up the house and grocery shopping. I really like everyone coming over. A side benefit is it gives us a chance to clean the house and patch up things we've let go all summer.

I got to rap the pipes outside so they don't freeze and break. The atv needs an oil change and break fluid. The horses need to be checked out so they aren't in a grumpy mood when the kids want to ride. Actually they like riding the ATV more than horses.

Well over the river and through the woods to Bob and Heather's they come!

2. That sounds fun
I always preferred to have guests come to my place rather than have to travel myself.

I'm working that day (grocery store). I don't mind - I have no family in the area and I get paid well for it. I also get out at 1 in the afternoon so it's not a big deal. My SO will be slaving over a hot stove while I work and it will just be the two of us for dinner. Probably a video in the evening and a nice quiet time.

3. 21 family members??? WOW!
Thanksgiving is the one time of year I wished I had a big family...or at least a family that wasn't so spread out across the country. I can't imagine entertaining 21 family members though. Is it a potluck thing or do you have to actually cook that much food?

As for me, well I'll be cleaning up after my husband who will be cooking. We usually go to my mom's house but this year she's coming to us because we want to start making our own holiday traditions. After being married for eight years, we think it's time to do things our way for a change. :)

4. We will NOT be travelling, we will NOT have guests, we WILL finally (I hope)
have a relaxing, sane Thanksgiving! After years of being nomads or hosting 21 people (give or take some), I am thrilled - ney, overjoyed to sleep in this year and just stay home.

I play to stay in my pajamas all day. I'm not even cooking a turkey so I don't have to go too crazy on getting up early to start the bird. I'm not even cleaning the house this weekend. I may rent a movie otherwise I plan on just reading, playing games with my family, talking without an argument (we're all compassionate liberal Dems! Yay!) I suspect my husband and kids will go to the barn before or after dinner, no way for me - it's going to be a barn free day for me but no problem as well if they scamper, more quiet cuddling time with the dogs and cats.

Peace and utter relaxation with my kids and husband. Joy!

5. No Family party
We had 6 invitations for Thanksgiving.

Not one of them family - I just have my brother who I never talk to (he's an software engineer with all that that entails and is married to a very twitchy woman), and Mrs GoS's family don't talk to one another - not politics, just 'he said, she said' stuff.

So, we're having 4 good friends over.

Goose, with lamb sausage and cornbread. Carrot soup. Potatoes dauphinoise. Plus whatever our friends bring.
Dessert - Tarte Tatin - my specialty. And lots of wine.
No football, no shopping. And we're doing holiday meal delivery for MANNA in the AM.

Friday we're going out with some other friends to a catered dinner - BYOB, cash only, and we've done it for the last 6 years but at different restaurants.

Saturday we've got another invite in Philly. And Sunday we see our goddaughter. Should be a good weekend.

made by yours truly. Then that evening we're going to meet friends for drinks.

We're not going to the parents this Thanksgiving, opting instead to share Thanksgiving together and spend Christmas with our respective families. This year my family Christmas is in Miami at my Grandmother's vacation home and about 30-40 members of the family will be there. I'll be at the beach. :D

8. We'll be going up north about 50 miles to our younger
daughter's home, her husband and son...

PLUS all his family.......and our older daughter, newly moved back from the Boston area......

I'll make my famous pumpkin pies, and take those......

It should be fun, if we can keep the conversation away from the political!

My sil's family is rather Republican...but at least they're not fundies!

And that weekend, LeftyMom and flvegan are coming down for a visit! :bounce: :bounce:

9. We'll be staying home for Thanksgiving this year.
Hubby and I will be having dinner at home. His brother may be coming for dinner.

Twenty one people for dinner? I almost went nuts last Thanksgiving. I had 12 people for dinner: my sister, brother-in-law, their three kids, four grandkids, my niece's boyfriend and his two teen age kids. I learned my lesson from that: next time, schedule a week's vacation from work.

13. Going to the neighborhood
cafeteria for TG dinner. I came home sick (upset tummy) Friday afternoon and am catching up on feeling better this weekend, so the house didn't get cleaned. Plus this year I just don't want to do the turkey and fixins' thing and have anyone over. Next weekend I'll clean the house and put up the Christmas decorations.

19. Smaller Thanksgiving
Twenty one people is a big crowd. The most I have ever had was 16 when I was still single and I cooked everything myself. My family is too far away and my husband's family rarely gets together as a whole family. About 14 years ago his family had a huge fight and Thanksgiving was canceled. My daughter was devastated. I decided to make pull out all stops so a new tradition started.

The menu doesn't change much but we bring out the china, silver and antique crystal. I have a set of champaign glasses that are close to 150 years old and we have the sparking cider, go around the table and talk about what we are thankful for and then toast. This year there will be eight of us. My nieces that have grown up with our tradition don't thing a thing about the glasses although their moms usually looked stressed to the max. They have been using the glasses since they were toddlers and the glasses are the special Thanksgiving glasses. It doesn't matter what time of year they are used-they are the special Thanksgiving glasses.

When I was growing up there were from 40-60 people at my granny and granddad's house. I have always wished we could celebrate with my husband's family as a happy, cohesive unit, but is just isn't. Instead we have family-extended and sisters and have made a wonderful tradition for ourselves. This year one of my nieces is coming to learn to make pecan and pumpkin pie, another wants to learn the frozen cranberry salad and my daughter is going to try the candied yams on her own. Obviously. I am the cook of the family. LOL

Sorry for the ramble. My parents are deceased and I am an only child. My aunts and uncles are live in other parts of the countries and my cousins are world wide. I get very sentimental this time of year. I am looking forward to the Rockettes as I do every year. As with my mom and granny, everything comes to a stop when they are performing in the parade. I still cry.

I really like big gatherings, since I come from a large family and my immediate family, me husband and kid, is really small. We now have Thanksgiving at my house, since my mom is tired of cooking, and it's really fun. (my husband makes up a time-line and we always manage to get dinner done a little early! without any bloodshed.) ;)

Welcome to DU, Irishonly. (from another of Irish ancestry!)

:P Hubby and I will get there about 11 AM (it's an hour and a half from our house). When lunch ends and we are finished visiting with everyone, we'll be back on the road by about 3:30 PM. Mom will have twelve people, including us. We'll have dinner with Hubby's parents that night (they live 30 minutes from us).

36. Just gonna be my sister, Mr. Wonderful and myself.
I ordered a small turkey (12 lbs) and am doing all the usual Thanksgiving fare. My sister is bringing the mandarin orange jello and the wine.

I'm planning on having dinner between 4:00-4:30 pm. After cleaning up the kitchen, we're all going to head over to my nephew's house to see the rest of the family.

Mr. Wonderful and I myself won't be here for Christmas. We're heading to Ireland to see his sisters and the rest of the crew on December 15th.

Friday's is going to be a really weird day for me. Usually I put up all the Christmas stuff, but not this year. I'll probably end up spending most the day here on DU...

You might want to limit your question a little bit.

I can tell you what *I* am doing, and of course, I can repeat what others in thread are doing, and I know the plans of a few other friends and family.

But there's no way in hell I can tell you what everyone is doing.
