Could someone please end my fruitless, obsessive search for a particular print
that my husband and I once owned many years ago and lost in a fire?

It was a village scene of somewhat rotund villagers going about their daily business in the street. For some reason, I think it was a French scene. It was reminiscent of a Breughel, or an LS Lowry or a Michel Delacroix or if you smooshed all those guys together you would get this print. We loved it so much and I have never seen its like again.

I have searched EBay, I have done google searches, I have gone through the entire artist roster on Art.com. I now turn to you guys as my last, best hope.

2. We think we got it at Pier One or the Harvard Coop in the late
seventies. I have googled "village scene with variations of "fat" "cubby" "rotund" people/villagers, "street scene print French and pretty much every variation on those words you can imagine. I have also used "print" and "painting" with all of the above. I have spent actual days doing searches until only my bloodshot eyes and aching hunched shoulders prevented me from continuing.

6. Have you tried contacting Pier One?
It's amazing the records stores keep of their inventory.Perhaps they could get you a title at least? Good luck. :hi:

5. Thanks so much aunt agonist and petronius for looking - but not either one.
This print has a somewhat primitive or "naif"(?) quality - it's almost a little cartoonish - it makes you smile to look at it. I could be wrong about the french part, but I think the stores were labelled and they had French names like boulangerie, etc. - but maybe not - that could be part of a false memory - maybe they just said bakery, etc.

But it was definitely a village or street scene with amusing chubby villagers.

10. a little bit. could be. Who is it?
Looks like a Dumere(?) to me, even a little Talouse Latreccy. I'm starting to feel that the whole premise of my search might be misguided and maybe I am looking for an "illustrator" as opposed to an "artist"

My street scene also had a skewed perspective. My husband has always thought the artist's name was something like Artaud but have never found anything under that name that seemed similar.

I believe Honore' Daumier was who you meant...

Here's a link that might help:
http://www.daumier.org/7.0.html

Fernando Botero did some pneumatic looking people, although his are a little more modern (30s type dress). When anyone says chubby people, he's automatically who I think of.
