Our cat died tonight.
I am in a terrible state of shock and pain. He was two years old. He had been under the weather for a couple of days but looked as if he was on the mend. I planned to take him in for a check up tomorrow. I found him today. My family has spent the past 4 hours mourning.

My kids are devastated. He was my fourteen yr olds best friend in the world. She just said, "This hurts so bad Mom. He was the thing that always made me feel better. I wish he was here to help me through this."

This is gonna take a long while to heal. Very sad day.

1. Ohhh, I'm soo sorry!!
We've been through that exact same thing, only with a beloved 19 yr old cat who died in my arms. It's so hard to lose a pet. I wish you and your family peace during this time of mourning. You're right, it does take time.

Nothing hurts more than the death of a dear friend. I'm so sorry for your loss. I want to say more, but can't find the words-- I've lost cats, and will lose more, but it never stops being a catastrophe. Cats are such lovely animals, and such valued friends.

15. So sorry
We lost our beloved cockatiel a year ago next week. We still miss him.

Don't let anyone tell you to "get over it" or that you're "overreacting". Love is love, no matter what species you share it with. Even though your cat's life was short, you should feel good that you gave him such a loving home.

It will get better. Gradually.

All the best.

16. So sorry for your loss.

It is oftentimes more difficult when it comes as a surprise like that. I hope you find solace in the knowledge that you and your family gave him a lifetime of comfort and love. A kitty can't ask for more than that.

Here's a hug for you:

And a candle for kitty:

P.S. What was your kitty's name?

23. For Cinder, and for you and your kids:
Poem For Cats

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

28. Awww...I'm so sorry for all of you!
Your cat was just as lucky to spend those two years with you as you were to spend it with him.

When our dog died last March, my sister's boyfriend found this poem by an unknown author and sent it to her...I think it works for precious kitties too.

“Last Night”

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peek.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said " it's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out...then come home to be with me.

Again, I am so very sorry.

35. Oh no!
I'm so sorry to hear this...The death of a pet is the loss of a beloved family member to a lot of us.
When I was 13, our dear dog, who'd been with us from the time I was 3, was hit by a car. I remember how devastating it was for me, especially since I didn't really fit in with the kids in my school. I became deeply depressed. I'm sorry for what your family is going through now...especially your daughter. Grief counseling may help...

59. We have two other cats
They have no symptoms of anything but i am taking them to the vet today.
This is why i am so shocked. They are all indoor cats. They have had their shots. My older cat is nearing 14 (i rescued him when he was 5 weeks old and nursed him through and illness) and aside from being a bit distraught, is completely normal acting. Our Ollie is a little under one year old.

I am feeling guilty. I should have taken him in when i first noticed he was under the weather. In the last 14 years Autumn has had a couple of colds but always felt better after a day or two. Cinder was so young, i just never expected this.

58. The 4 beasties and I send good purr vibes to you and your family
It is so sad to lose them, whether they are 17 years old or 17 months old. They work their way into your heart and an empty space has to be left when they go. Your kitty may have had something going on that gave you no signs of illness, like a heart defect (which happened to a friend of mine), or one of those blasted urinary things.

I have mourned many wonderful cats in my 58 years, lost for a wide variety of reasons. My condolences to you and yours.
