The album is the soundtrack to a Cirque du Soleil show of the same name playing in Las Vegas. George Martin and his son Giles Martin have remastered several original Beatles songs and remixed and mashed up. In other words, there are medleys created out of several songs like "Drive My Car/The Word/What You're Doing," and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite/I Want You (She's So Heavy)/Helter Skelter;" as well as random samples. "Strawberry Fields Forever," for example, builds from John Lennon's acoustic demo, gradually segues into the original version of the song and then seques into a carnival-like medley of several other Beatles songs like "Penny Lane," "Piggies," and "Hello Goodbye".
My favorite is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," which takes George Harrison's lovely acoustic demo from Anthology 3 and adds a gorgeous string accompaniment scored by George Martin. (Incidentally, that's the only piece of original music on the album - everything else comes from the original Beatles tapes or released work.)
It's generally gotten very positive reviews.
It's released on Tuesday. And if you want to hear it now, you can stream the entire album on the Beatles website.
Really cool, I have to say.
