4. I have a problem with Sushi |
|
It's gotten very expensive. I used to be able to pig out for something like ten dollars at that place in Japan Center (SF) where the sushi rides around in boats. I think it was called Ichiban. Now I can easily spend twenty five dollars and still want more. Thankfully PUBLIX and Nature's Finest seel sushi for about a third to half of the restuarant price. Some places are experimenting with all-you-can-eat, but we don't have one around here and I suspect that those places don't have my favorites (sea urchin and smoked eel).
I make my own at home sometimes, but it's not the same.

6. Very expensive here, too |
|
In a pinch I get the rainbow roll from PUBLIX, like you said, or from Wild Oats. When I'm flush and feeling a little financially crazy, I go to Sushi King, which is more upscale than that tacky name and has pretty excellent freakin' selections. Like you guys I've nearly bankrupted myself on this stuff. I spent $50 a few weeks ago and was still really hungry.

I wouldn't eat Lutefisk on a dare. I wouldn't serve that to a POW.

11. WASABIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!! |
|
Alas, it's very hard to get good sushi around here. I have to drive 70 miles to find any that's worth eating. I like to load it down with so much wasabi that I bust out in actual tears.
People around here hear "sushi" and picture people chewing great mounds of raw fish steak. They don't know the reality. Around here, roadkill is a gourmet delicacy.

12. Acquiring Sushi in Central NJ isn't too hard |
|
especially with several supermarkets nearby that feature excellent basic sushi. Both Wegmans in Bridgewater and Kings in Bedminster have very good sushi which makes for a tasty lunch break, without breaking the bank. Today is a sushi and salad day in preparation for the gorging that may take place on Thursday.

The Quest for Sushi almost makes my traveling life bearable (quote from SO at the end of last trip together: "I don't know how you do this for weeks at a time - it SUCKS.")
I have favorite sushi joints in most of the non-Midwest regular destinations.
There's a little strip-mall place in Ft. Lauderdale that has outside seating and caters to yachties. Between the reasonable sashimi platter and the great eavesdropping, it keeps me coming back to the same hotel down the street, despite many temptations to stay elsewhere.
There's another little place in Beverly Hills that the Chowhounds HATE, but again, great sashimi platter, and friendly sushi chefs.
San Franscisco is another sushi haven, except there are long lines outside the best places. If I have to stay in South San Francisco, I've got sushi bases covered in San Mateo.
Just found a great place near 36 & Lex in NYC - you know you're in sushi heaven when you're one of the only Caucasians in the place, (not to mention the only woman not wearing a kimono).
If it weren't for sushi, travel would be incredibly more depressing, and WAY more fattening!!!!!!
