Deep Fried Turkey Mishap Destroys Mobile Home
<snip>

HURLEYVILLE, N.Y. -- Tis the season for turkey, and turkey mishaps.

A mobile home burned to the ground in New York Friday after a man trying to deep fry a turkey accidentally knocked over the vat, sparking the blaze.

Firefighters in Hurleyville said the propane-heated fryer flipped over after Steven Devito dropped in the turkey. Devito was cooking on the porch of his trailer when the burning oil ignited the vinyl siding.

Devito grabbed his dog and escaped unharmed.

10. the aluminum ladder
and pulley system made perfect sense

but the asbestos robe and blast helmet with facescreen were a little much

At least the mobile home guy got off cheaper than a divorce or a tornado.

7. Be that as it may, he's still a dumbass
I am THE highest-volume turkey fryer dealer in Cumberland County, NC, and I guarantee that every one of the THOUSANDS of turkey fryers I have sold over the last five years has come with some way to LOWER the turkey into the boiling oil. You're not supposed to just chuck the carcass into the grease the way this guy did.

Lowering the turkey into the boiling oil is like playing a country record backwards: your wife comes back, your kids come back, your dog comes back, you sober up, your pickup starts running again, they let you out of prison and it stops raining.

15. You seem to have the wrong impression of mobile homes are like these days.
The stereotype for 'trailers' is not the reality these days and hasn't been for a long time. Mobile homes, or more properly 'manufactured housing' is an economical way to own a home in much of rural America. The newer ones are well insulated (better than the old wood frame houses )and often have very smart and efficient layouts. They are great starter homes and perfect for downsizing retirees who want low maintenance and single-level living space.

19. Yes. Not everybody owns a house.
Trailer living definitely beats apartment living. No common walls. Room to work on the car. Room to fry that turkey--although accidents do happen.

26. I disagree.
Apartment living is A-OK.

True, there is that noise consideration unless they built a decent complex, in which case one could own an entire flock of Sun Conures and nobody would hear a thing...

But it's not all bad. Management has to do the lawn and gardening, all maintenane, and so on.

30. Sure, many apartments are fine.
But some, in the worse parts of town, are definitely NOT fine. There are no lawns or gardens. And an exploding meth lab will burn EVERYTHING down.

Hey, I'm a renter, too. I've got a little house in a fine neighborhood in Houston. No meth labs nearby--& probably none in your apartment complex, either. But--for some people--living in a trailer is a step up.

23. Especially if you don't live on the coast or in tornado alley.
I've actually had a mobile home fantasy for quite a while.
I want 3 set up in a 'U' shape around a central patio & pool.
One for the master bedroom/bath/office/den.
One for the kitchen/bar and gathering/partying/eating room.
One for guest quarters.
And the patio/pool area would have a covered, screened in FULL outdoor kitchen.
And a toilet/urinal and sink.
Ok, maybe an outdoor shower, too.
Adequately privacy screened, of course.

And all single-wides.
None of those fancy-schmancey dubbel-wides.
;-)

32. Years ago, my uncle & his family lived in a trailer....
Down on the Gulf Coast, near Corpus Christi. Not in a "trailer park"--but in a lot he'd rented. Quite isolated & beautiful.

Yes, a hurricane came. But the family left in PLENTY of time. Afterwards, they lived in a house.

31. Excuse me, but you sound like the type of person
who looks down their nose on those who live in mobile homes. I live in a mobile home by choice. I bought my home for cash and I own it free and clear. I did not want to make high house payments, so this was the cheapest way to go. My only expense is $320 lot rent, which includes garbage pickup and water. Please tell me something, what type of home do you live in?

35. I honestly don't think the poster is doing this
I believe she's merely going by the popular culture stereotype of mobile homes and their residents. She lives in a highly urbanized area where these type of homes aren't used. Alot of people i know who grew up in big cities think mobile homes/modular homes are scuzzy. Or in suburban areas where zoning didn't permit non stick-built homes. And, because of this zoning, unfortunate reputations grow up around "trailer parks" in certain areas -- again making the news.

I grew up in a very rural area in the 60's and 70's, and the homes then were mainly very, very badly built... the only people we knew who bought them were poorish people. The homes started changing in the 80's.

What is shown in news stories, etc. ARE the scuzzy, broken-down trailer used a s a meth lab, or inhabited by people too poor to afford a down-payment on a stick-built house.

I don't think the poster's point was elitist, as much as perhaps not understanding.

39. Well, I live in a very well-managed mobile home park.
You will not see any broken-down trailers here. In fact, you would be very surprised at how nice most of the homes here are. Most of them are very well maintained with manicured yards. I would invite the poster here to my park and she will not see any "poverty."

33. I think the Cajuns invented deep-fried turkey....
They're the same folks who decided that boiled crawfish would make a tasty treat. I like both dishes, but will let the experts prepare them for me.

A well-fried turkey is quite moist & delicious. And the same oil can cook several turkeys, one after another.

First rule: Don't open a beer until the turkey is safely back in the kitchen & the oil is cooling down!

41. Deep fried turkey is one of those Southern things that have no point of origin
The device used to deep fry a turkey is the SAME device used to steam seafood.

In the Carolinas, a fine Christmas tradition is to purchase a couple bushels of oysters on December 24 and steam them on Christmas Day after coming home from church. Eventually someone was going to figure out you could fill the pot with oil and fry a turkey in it.

You can also use it to steam small crabs. This I really like--you get a dozen of these little guys, cook 'em up and chow down. Good eating, although my wife doesn't think so.

Sadly, most of the turkey fryers I sell don't come with the basket you must have to steam seafood.
