I just had the BEST Sushi Roll EVER for lunch: M&M Roll
Spicy Tuna, Kana, Asparagus roll with some cruncy/spicy stuff on the outside of the roll.

It was so damn good!

9. Sushi is not necessarily raw fish :)
Raw fish is called sashimi. Sashimi can be a topping/filling for sushi, but not all sushi contains raw fish. Some of the yummiest sushi I've ever had contained no fish at all. Technically, sushi is a way of eating rice.

13. My non-fish sushi is made this way:
A package of nori (the seaweed wrap that goes around the outside)
3 cups of cooked white rice
1 cup cooked mushrooms
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar

Mix all the filling ingredients together. Roll out a sheet of nori (use water on your fingers to keep it from being too sticky). Spread the rice mixture on the sheet, leaving 1/2 inch at the bottom bare. Roll up the nori, dab a little water on the bare part to help it seal, then let it sit in the fridge for an hour or so. Then cut it into slices, and serve with hot horseradish dip. You can also add cooked fish, or cooked salad shrimp. :)

18. You're very welcome!
Any reputable sushi place will be able to point you to the choices that do NOT include raw animal flesh of any kind.

Another option, in a pinch--if you're worried about raw meat, tell the servers that you're a vegetarian. You get TONS of help finding non-meat selections that way. *smiles*

17. Sushi for the Beginner
If you want to work your way up to the good stuff, here's what you should order first.

The following are all cooked in one way or another.

Ebi - Shrimp
Unagi - Marinated Eel
Tamago - Egg

If you like smoked salmon also get the Sake.

Then for rolls, get the California roll which has cooked crab in it, and then the kappa maki.

That'll probably stuff you. You should top that off with an order of Tekka Maki though. It's the same as the Kappa maki (cucumber) but it has raw tuna in it. It's tight, and will ease you into it. If you like spicy stuff, order a spicy tuna roll.

If you like that stuff you should try, just once, to move into the raw sushi. It really is good for th emost part. Try an order of Maguro, and Toro first. Tuna usually goes across the best to people at first.

19. I've always thought that Unagi
had a rather strong "fishy" taste to it, unless served with avocado. The avocado cuts the fishy taste a lot, for me.

I absolutely LOVE the Tai with hot vinegar jelly. *melts*

20. Never had it with avocado
but sounds good.

Unagi definately is a strong taste. It's topped with a very sticky sweet glaze as well, and if you don't like the fish you're not going to like it. I love it though.

My favorite all around sushi/sashimi type dish though is blended chilled toro. That and a spicy squid salad. With the cold milky sake'.

mmmmmmm....

11. Trust me, it's not all raw fish
You'd probably like stuff like the California Roll or Shrimp Tempura roll (has 'fried' shrimp in it). Me, I can eat the raw fish straight and it doesn't phase me a bit.

But I've turned on enough folks to Sushi who kept thinking 'raw fish' including my mother. Damn, I want to take one of those M&M Rolls in to Harrisburg when I visit my family. They would love it (although mind you, the tuna is raw)
