Arrrgghhhhh! I was invited to a thanksgiving dinner I. DO. NOT. WANT. TO GO. TO.
How in HELL can I get out of it without displacing bad kharma? (Whenever I say I have a stomach bug to get out of something, I GET a stomach bug; if I say the car broke down, the car WILL break down!)

We're in France, BTW.

I met an american woman and her family last year shortly after getting here. Her son is here, last year of school, her daughter is in Canada in college. She knows several other americans here and wanted to put together a nice thanksgiving meal. We get together occasionally, and she has some nice qualities and some qualities that perhaps others would appreciate more than I do. She complains, she whines, she's never happy, etc. And she rarely stops talking. But she's a decent person, but I don't make an effort to spend a lot of time with her.

So she is throwing this thanksgiving dinner with another family that is American and french. Really, just not people I have anything in common with...

I. Do. Not. Want. To. Go... and I said I would because at the time I thought I was going to be in Florence for that weekend. Now... I'm NOT.

HOW do I get out of this graciously!!!????? HELP HELP HELP HELP! I just don't want to be around these people. I couldn't give a crap about the holiday...

*sob*

1. You have the right to change your mind.

If I were you, I'd just tell her the truth as graciously as possible. Can you telephone her and say, "I know it's rude for me to back out of Thanksgiving dinner with so little notice, but I'm really just not up to it and wouldn't make a very good dinner companion."

Then, send a nice bottle of wine or table centerpiece or something.

7. That would indeed be the most honest thing to do, but it seems the most HONORABLE
thing to do is to just go and enjoy myself!

2. Not a fun situation, rad.
Can you perhaps just tell this person that you are feeling stressed, and that while you appreciate her invitation, you need to decompress and just hang out at home. Then, if you feel okay with it, if you like her, suggest a lunch in the near future.

4. Tell them you "have other plans for DINNER", but you would love to stop by for dessert
Do your own thing for dinner , and then stop in for a piece of pie later on :)

8. Yes, sorry again.
I really do think you have to suck it up. You can drink a lot before you go, as long as you're not driving. :)

We like you around here. :D

14. drink.....it has several benefits
Start drinking early. There are several benefits: you will not notice her whining, you will not care about the rest of the dinner guests, and if you act up a little you will definitely not be invited back for christmas dinner. It's a win-win-win deal.

Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 08:04 AM by carlydenise
go ahead and go...it's probably not going to be that bad once you get there and settled in, just think of it as a free meal, eat the meal and hang around a little after for polite conversation, then make an excuse that you were also invited to another home, and you have to make an appearance. maybe that other family is just being polite too; and I am the same way, karma definitely follows my every word when I try and make up any kind of excuse, it keeps me honest.
