10. I am a real hippie-- born in the early '50's...
Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 02:23 PM by mike_c
...grew up in the sixties, been a stoner for nearly 40 years, have never cut my hair. Tuned in, turned on, and dropped out. Now I'm back in Babylon, but I'm still a hippie. I do not own a suit or a tie and I never will.

13. I own more than one tie dye, and my husband is a Dead Head.
I own multiple tie dye shirts and wear them proudly--even to buy groceries in places other than the whole foods store or to go to a retail place (non Walmart, of course..) Oh, and we are at protests or on picket lines at least four times per year for one thing or another, along with going to any number of potlucks where Vegan is more common, rather than the exception.

What REALLY clarifies me as a hippie is Kevsand. He wears his denim, hand painted, Terrapin Station jacket to walk our daughter to school. He also shaves only when we're working a political campaign. He works for a progressive statewide non-profit and has been there for 20 years...

I think we qualify as hippies.

32. If "cool" is embarrassing your 9 year old then we maybe qualify!
We do manage to embarrass her with some regularity.

However she does wear a T-shirt with a Frederick Douglass quote on it that says,"Power concedes nothing without a demand..." and she did volunteer with a local social justice organization this last two summers, so she isn't exactly a little Rush clone, I guess.

She recently went on a field trip with her class from school to see an African style drumming group at the local university center. She came home and told us she wants to start hand drumming lessons back up again--those stopped last fall when she picked up an electric guitar.

Yeah, our kid is showing signs of growing up a hippie even IF she doesn't embrace it yet! She has been to peace protests, and she has marched with us for Labor related causes along with Jobs with Justice actions.

We are not "cool" I don't think, so much as socially aware and active. And you ARE our friend. The correct hippie saying is "We are ALL friends. Peace and love, man."

Come on by some time. We'll hang out in the back yard and talk politics and drink wine.

Laura

24. Made my own bell bottoms with inset fabric 1968
Made love bead necklaces, headbands, wore a wide leather wrist band, moccassins, patches on my jeans where there really were holes, grooved to all the best of the best, and sometimes on LSD, lived in a VW camper for three years, traveling to almost everywhere west of the Mississippi with my Airedale mix dog, Flippy.

Oh! You want PROOF!!!! :P

Well!

Here's Flip from back then! The ULTIMATE in Hippie Dogdom!
(Lived to be 17, was a brownie eater (stole'em whenever he could)
and like to have his turn in the "smoking circle".

29. Witness:
I was out collecting on my paper route one day. I must've been 16, so it was 1972, and I had hair nearly to my shoulders.

While Mom goes to get her purse, her little boy, about 4, stands there staring up at me. Finally, he says, "Are you a hippie?"

I said, "Sure, man. Aren't we all?"

ideologically--anti war, democratic and all that jazz. I'm just not a vegetarian and the Greatful Dead isn't my favorite band. I consider myself a neo-hippie.
